At the 2022 New York Film Critics Circle Awards, SS Rajamouli received the Best Director trophy for his work on RRR.
With his passion project, RRR, starring Jr. NTR and Ram Charan, SS Rajamouli is setting records by winning numerous honours in the West. The US’s New York Film Critics Circle (NYFCC) honoured the director with its Best Director prize on January 5. In accepting the prize, the director noted that RRR elicited similar responses in the West and among Indians. He showed up for the occasion with his wife Rama Rajamouli, his son, and other members of his entire family.
Less than a year has passed since the premiere of SS Rajamouli’s historical drama RRR, yet the buzz surrounding the movie is still enormous. SS Rajamouli, who has already won a number of prestigious prizes, has now added a new one to his collection after being recognised as Best Director at the 2022 New York Film Critics Circle Awards. In a recent video that has gone viral, the filmmaker is shown accepting the prize as the crowd claps enthusiastically for him.
Rajamouli acknowledged the committee and the crowd for their support of his movie after accepting the prize. “You have drawn a lot of people’s attention to a little Indian film from the south.” He also recalled the reactions of the viewers when his film was first shown. It was pure wonder, like what we just observed in the globe. I want my viewers to feel that, he said. The director also expressed his gratitude to his family for their unconditional support.
About SS Rajamouli’s RRR film
The film portrays the story of two rebels who challenge the strength of the empire in British-ruled India. The rebels are Telugu independence fighters Alluri Seetharama Raju and Komaram Bheem. NTR Jr., Ram Charan, Alia Bhatt, Ajay Devgn, and Shriya Saran are among the cast members. The movie was equally released in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam all across the world. The film has made more than Rs 1200 crore in box office revenue since its March 2022 premiere.
The movie is competing for nominations in the Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, and other Oscar categories. It was not chosen as India’s official entry for the 2024 Oscars, nevertheless. The Bahubali series made Rajamouli renowned, and he has been travelling the US to support the movie. He has also visited the UK to launch the country’s BAFTA campaign.
Speaking further, SS Rajamouli revealed his success formula, stating that all of his films are supported by family members and that for him, filmmaking is more of a family business. His wife is a costume designer, and his son Karthikeya serves as the line producer for all of his movies. Film production has become more of a family activity for him because his father provides him with fresh narrative ideas and his cousins assist him in various aspects of the craft.

SS Rajamouli, Ram Charan, and Jr. NTR will all be present at the January 11 Golden Globe ceremony in Los Angeles. RRR is competing for Best Foreign Film, but Naatu Naatu, the song from the movie, is up for Best Original Song. RRR will also receive a special screening on January 9 as a member of the Beyond Fest in the US. There will also be SS Rajamouli, Jr. NTR, Ram Charan, and composer MM Keeravani.
