Amritpal Singh’s supporters began distributing frantic videos urging supporters to approach him as the Punjab Police attempted to apprehend him, causing the Punjab Internet to be cut off until noon tomorrow, according to authorities. At least 78 people have reportedly been detained, and some of them have also reportedly been arrested. Daljeet Singh Kalsi, the person in charge of Amritpal Singh’s money, has been apprehended by the Punjab Police in Haryana’s Gurgaon.
A special state police squad comprised of officials from seven districts tracked the Khalistani leader’s convoy as it traveled to the Shahkot tehsil in Jalandhar. He was apparently last seen riding away on a motorcycle at high speeds.
The internet was down throughout Punjab until 12 p.m. Sunday, after Amritpal Singh’s aides hurriedly urged followers to travel to Shahkot.
In anticipation of disruption, a large police presence has been established outside of Amritpal Singh’s village, Jallupur Khaira, in the Amritsar district. According to reports, police and paramilitary personnel have cordoned off the village. According to insiders, the state government waited till the G20 conference was done before taking action against him.
Deep Sidhu, a singer, and activist launched “Waris Punjab De,” which is managed by Amritpal Singh. Deep Sidhu was killed in an automobile accident last February.
Because the police in Shahkot were aware of Amritpal Singh’s coming in advance, they closed all roadways and erected large barricades. Armed supporters frequently accompany the Khalistani leader, who has been active in Punjab for a few years.
Amritpal Singh was at the focus of a large protest on February 24 following the arrest of his key assistant, kidnapping suspect Lovepreet Singh. Lovepreet Singh’s supporters assaulted a police station in Ajnala, a town west of Amritsar, armed with swords and pistols, and demanded assurances from officers that they would free Lovepreet Singh. Afterward, he blamed the violence on the Punjab Police.
Six police officers were injured during the altercation, including one with the rank of Superintendent of Police. If an FIR was filed against Amritpal Singh for the violence, it has not yet been made public by the police.
In response to the police action on Saturday, a man who “used to talk about taking up guns for Khalistan is now scurrying away fearing the police,” according to Congress MP Ravneet Singh Bittu.

In response to criticism from the state’s opposition parties, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann recently announced that his government was committed to sustaining peace and order in the province and that no one would be allowed to upset the laboriously gained tranquility. Anurag Thakur, a Union Minister, slammed the AAP administration in Punjab earlier this month, alleging that after the formation of “one government,” law and order “collapsed” in the state. He urged the AAP government to “wake up” and act.
