Thursday, March 23:Russian drones swarmed Kyiv, killing around four people and wounding many others according to the Ukrainian army. A military strike was ordered and drones were sent into Ukrainian territory. The drone strike comes as a display of force and power. This was Putin’s way of displaying the power Russia possessed as Xi Jinping left for China after his two-day visit to Moscow.
How did the drone strike happen?
The drone strike happened overnight, attacking people when they were unprepared. The Ukrainian military said that it shot down 16 drones deployed by Russia. Moscow deployed 21 Iranian-made Shahed suicide drones in Kyiv.
The drones killed 4 people and destroyed other infrastructure. Some have been said to be stuck under the rubble.
“Over 20 Iranian murderous drones, plus missiles, numerous shelling occasions, and that’s just in one last night of Russian terror against ??. Every time someone tries to hear the word “peace” in Moscow, another order is given there for such criminal strikes.” said Ukrainian President Zelensky on Twitter
Xi Jinping visited his ally after an arrest warrant for child abduction was filed against Russian President Vladimir Putin and another official. Putin had said that he would be looking toward his “friend” Xi Jinping during such a difficult time.
The United States of America criticized the timing of Xi’s visit as it came two days after the International Criminal Court filed an arrest warrant against Vladimir Putin for deporting children to Russia forcibly. Moscow released a statement saying that they transported the children to offer protection and that the agenda behind it was purely humanitarian. The pressure from the USA also comes in when China decided to intervene in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
China had proposed to dissolve the conflict between Ukraine and Russia but no concrete results have been achieved so far. Beijing had published a report with a proposal to settle with Russia and Ukraine but had no specific details regarding how it was going to achieve that.
Ukraine welcomed the idea of a settlement but only if certain negotiations were accepted. Ukraine placed the condition that all territories that were ceased must be returned to Ukraine if Moscow wants to reach a settlement.
Putin applauded Xi for the strategy and attributed its failure to Kyiv and the West. For its part, Kyiv has cautiously welcomed the Chinese suggestion while pleading with Beijing to take into account Ukraine’s peace proposal. Zelensky has requested a conversation with Xi.
Late in 2022, large waves of Russian airstrikes on targets like the one on Wednesday occurred on average once a week; but, in recent weeks, the frequency has decreased as Western nations assert that Moscow is running low on missiles and drones.

Russia and Ukraine War
Russia has begun a big winter attack utilizing hundreds of thousands of recently called-up reservists and prisoners recruited as mercenaries from jail after Ukraine reclaimed territory throughout the second half of 2022.
The war between Russia and Ukraine has been going on for more than a year now since it started last year in February.
Moscow hosting Xi this week was Putin’s most significant diplomatic action since the war started a year ago. Putin and Xi called one another as “close friends,” pledged economic cooperation, and said that ties between their nations are at their best.
Russian President Putin also remarked that whenever someone tries to hear the word ‘peace’, another order for a strike similar to the drone attack is carried out.
The search for survivors buried under the destroyed infrastructure is ongoing and the death toll is predicted to go up.
