Jennifer Aniston pointed out that this generation takes jokes very seriously and it became hard to do humor. Some people find ‘Friends’ the greatest comedy show in the world offensive.
Jennifer Aniston spoke about how comedy has changed and how people get offended easily over a joke. She expressed her opinion on the debut of her new Netflix movie ‘Murder Mystery 2’.
The former Friends star reportedly told the French news agency AFP that comedy has evolved, and movies have developed. Before diving into the details, she remarked that now that you have to exercise extreme caution, it’s a little tough, which is difficult for comedians to do because the appeal of comedy is that we make fun of ourselves and everyday situations. The purpose of comedy is to educate people on how ridiculous people were and people weren’t allowed to be added by Jennifer Aniston.
Jennifer Aniston became more specific. She said that some kids from this generation find Friends offensive and some things aren’t intentional and should have been thought through.
Problems around Friends
There have been some issues about the show as it showcases 6 adults who are in their mid and late twenties being able to live in Manhattan (which is one of the expensive parts of New York) and shows the characters are homophobic in some perspectives. The main two examples are when Ross thinks his daughter’s nanny who is a man is gay and he is very uncomfortable that a man does the job which was “designated” for women and the running joke that Chandler is gay and about his transgender parent.
Lisa Kudrow who played Phoebe Buffay in the show tells that if the show is rebooted it wouldn’t be an all-white cast. By claiming that “Friends” producers David Crane and Marta Kauffman had “no business” portraying storylines about people of color given their own experiences and the show inspired by their life after college, Kudrow explained why the show lacked diversity. In its 10 seasons and 236 episodes, “Friends” very seldom used performers of color in key parts, with all six of the main characters being white.
Marta Kaufmann spoke out last year about the lack of diversity in the show. After the killing of George Floyd that she started to have conflicts about how she bought into systematic racism that she wasn’t aware of and need to rectify it. She pledged that she makes sure that in every production she works on, she wants to make sure that she actively seeks out young authors of color and is conscious of hiring individuals of color in every production she is going to produce in the future. She will be curious to know how she conducts herself moving forward.
Jennifer Aniston adds that everyone requires humor and humor is needed in the world and we shouldn’t be too serious about ourselves. Particularly in the US people take jokes very seriously. Jennifer Aniston’s new movie ‘Murder Mystery 2’ starring Adam Sandler will be released on March 31st on Netflix.
