Summary of UNSC Presidency and Russia
Russia, as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), is one of the countries that can assume the UNSC Presidency. The UNSC Presidency is a rotational duty that each member of the Council assumes for one month at a time, in alphabetical order.
During its Presidency, Russia, like any other UN Security Council member, is responsible for leading the Council’s deliberations and operations, facilitating talks among its members, and supervising the passage of resolutions pertaining to international peace and security. Russia has held the UN Security Council Presidency several times over the years, the most recent being in September 2021.
However, Russia’s recent actions in Ukraine, such as the annexation of Crimea and its support for separatist insurgents in eastern Ukraine, have strained relations with other UN Security Council members and the international community. As a result, Russia’s president may attract increased scrutiny or criticism, particularly if its actions or attitudes are deemed to violate international law or United Nations ideals.
In general, the UN Security Council Presidency is a rotating role that each member of the Council occupies for one month, and it is responsible for directing and managing the UN Security Council’s meetings and activities during its term. Individual member nations’ actions and policies, such as Russia’s, can, however, influence the perception and efficacy of the UN Security Council presidency .

Ukraine is upset as Russia leads the UNSC.
A prominent Ukrainian official called Russia’s taking over the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council a “symbolic blow” on April 1.
“It’s not just unfortunate.” “It is another symbolic blow to the rule-based international relations system.” Andriy Yermak, the chief of staff of Ukraine’s president, tweeted in English.
Russia assumed leadership of the United Nations’ top security committee on Saturday, a position that rotates every month. Moscow held the position until February 2022, when its troops invaded Ukraine in full force.
The Kremlin announced on Friday that it intended to “exercise all its rights” in the role.
The US encouraged Russia on Thursday to “act itself professionally” when it takes over the job, saying there was no way to prevent Moscow from taking over.
Mr. Yermak, a Ukrainian official, also lashed out at Iran, which Kyiv and its allies accuse of supplying Moscow with weapons, including hundreds of assault drones that have threatened Ukrainian infrastructure installations. Tehran denies sending weapons to Russia.
“It is quite striking that on the festival of one terror state, Iran, another terror state, Russia, begins to preside over the United Nations Security Council,” Mr. Yermak said, referring to Iran’s Islamic Republic Day.
