BLACKPINK creates history as the first Asian and all-female band to headline the biggest music festival, Coachella. The band headlined on the night two of three. The band members Jennie Kim, Lisa, Rose and Jisoo performed group and their solo songs in Coachella.
The introduction probably served to provide some historical context for the Blackpink show against the backdrop of earlier festivals, and the set undoubtedly succeeded in doing so. Conquering the biggest stage at the biggest festival in the United States is no easy task, but doing it as a musician who was considered niche only a few years ago is even more impressive.
BLACKPINK’s performance in Coachella
The group’s headlining performance at the festival’s 2024 edition made it very evident that it not only had a fully developed and self-assured band, but also completely owned the topline position. The four Blackpink members, Jennie Kim, Lisa, Rose, and Jisoo, performed songs like “How You Like That” and “Tally” (from 2022’s number-one “Born Pink”) with choreography precisely timed to take advantage of the stage’s enormous video screens, as well as routines and allusions to previous pop heroines like Lady Gaga and Janet Jackson. They were joined on stage by a team of dancers and a solid band. Pyrotechnic eruptions, confetti cannons, and a mid-show section showcasing each member’s individual talents gave the pacing a massive excitement.
And all of that is without even mentioning the Coachella-setting opening light show, a jaw-dropping, drone-powered 3D extravaganza from the company Skymagic that featured iconic artwork created from floating, luminous balls of light high above the stage, including the Ferris wheel, a butterfly, a dragon, and more. Pink Venom, a recently released song from Born Pink, was performed first, followed by Kill This Love, How You Like That, and other songs. The group members alternated individual songs in the middle. Jisoo’s Flower was performed after You & Me by Jennie. Rose then gave performances of Lisa’s Money, Gone, and On the Ground. The group finished their set with Forever Young before continuing with Shut Down.
BLACKPINK
The members of the South Korean girl group BLACKPINK are Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa. The group made its debut in August 2016 with the release of their single album Square One, which included the songs “Whistle” and “Boombayah,” which became their first number-one entries on the US Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart and the South Korean Gaon Digital Chart, respectively.
Blackpink, sometimes referred to as the “biggest girl group in the world,” is the most popular Korean girl group abroad. With their second studio album Born Pink (2022), which is the best-selling album of all time by a female group in South Korea and the first to sell over two million copies, they are the highest-charting female Korean act on the US Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 1.
Their loyal following, known as the Blinks, spans the globe and has broken numerous YouTube viewing records. Their lyrics are a free-flowing blend of Korean and English. And on Saturday, their frantic, nearly 90-minute show drove home the reason why: the hard pop banger’s global language. Blackpink’s music is nearly always upbeat, confident, and energising; it gives the crowd an adrenaline rush that causes them to do anything from bop along to leap around.
Coachella 2024
As the first ever Korean act to perform as the festival’s headlining act, BLACKPINK delivered a historic Coachella concert. In addition to welcoming a surprise visitor in Post Malone, Bad Bunny made history by closing out the main stage as the first Spanish-language performer. For “”Beso” and “Vampiros,” Rosala invited her fiancé Rauw Alejandro to the stage. Blink-182, a last-minute addition to Coachella’s lineup, performed a hit-heavy reunion set. The songs “Miracle” by Calvin Harris and Ellie Goulding and “Never Felt So Alone” by Labrinth and Billie Eilish both made their live debuts on stage.
