A poster in Midnapore, West Bengal, stirred up a storm in the state. The poster showed state chief minister Mamata Banerjee as the goddess “Durga” and prime minister Narendra Modi as the demon “Mahisasur.”
The opposition parties are also depicted as goats on the poster, with the warning that
“if someone else votes for them [opposition parties], they will be sacrificed.”
In the Midnapore district, this has sparked controversy, with local BJP member Vipul Acharya calling it an insult to Sanatan Dharam and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
He went on to say that the party would file a complaint with the Election Commission over it. TMC leader Anima Saha is a party candidate in this district’s Ward Number 1. Anima Saha stated that she had no idea who put up this poster.
Anima Saha said,
“Had I known about this, I would never have allowed such posters to be placed up in the region.”
The uproar over the poster emerged just as West Bengal’s civic elections were approaching. On February 27, voters in 108 municipalities will go to the polls.
Goddess Durga fought Mahisasur for fifteen days, during which he changed his shape to become various animals and misled her, according to mythology.
Goddess Durga stabbed him with her trident when he transformed into a buffalo, which was his end. On the day of Mahalaya, Mahishasura was defeated and killed.
