To many, the reports suggesting Kane’s departure from the London club as imminent would come as no surprise. Rather it has been baffling why the top scorer in Tottenham’s history has stuck with them for nine seasons while being one of the most sought-after strikers in the world.
Kane, who became a starter for Spurs in 2014, after serving a few clubs on loan spells, has so far scored 213 times for the club. The second-highest goal-scorer in the history of the Premier League, however, has not managed to win a single trophy for the club.
The 2018 Fifa World Cup Golden Boot winner continues to be linked with a move away from Tottenham with Bayern Munich, Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Chelsea as likely suitors. Hence, at the end of yet another prolific season with 30 league goals without a trophy at the club, Kane might finally be tempted to move to a new destination.
In April, Spurs Chairman Daniel Levy insisted that the England captain would remain in Spurs and would eventually win a trophy with them. He further reiterated Kane’s legendary status at the club by saying “I hope one day that there is a statue of Harry Kane outside our stadium,” in an interview. Yet the Chairman’s words do not guarantee silverware for Kane, who, as one of the finest forwards of this generation deserves a club that guarantee collective success.

Bayern Munich often suffered in front of goal last season as they had to rely primarily on Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting following Polish striker Robert Lewandowski’s move to Barcelona. Lewandowski, who had been in phenomenal goal-scoring form as he scored 50 times in just 46 appearances in his final season at the club, has left a huge void.
Choupo-Moting has failed to step into Lewandowski’s shoes with only 17 goals scored for the Bavarian club this season. On the other hand, Bayern’s high-profile signing of Senegalese winger Sadio Mane from Liverpool misfired as the wide man struggled to settle in Germany.
The 6-time Champions League winners experienced a rare turbulent season which saw them winning the Bundesliga by a hair’s breadth – a trophy they have now won 11 times in a row. However, their European campaign came to a disappointing end when they failed to recover after a heavy 3-0 defeat against Manchester City at the Etihad in the quarter-finals.
Kane’s arrival could hand Bayern the much-needed clarity, balance, and experience they have been lacking in the post-Lewandowski era. Although it remains to be seen whether the Englishman could replicate the Barcelona forward’s prolific form, he certainly is a more complete attacker who relies on an exemplary reading of the game, passing skills, and intelligent off-the-ball movements to create opportunities.
Kane can transform Bayern Munich into UCL contenders again and be worthy challengers for City’s European title. The deal, however, is not done yet and it remains to be seen whether the forward prioritizes winning silverware over the personal achievement of becoming the top scorer in Premier League history.
