In a tightly contested match in Limburg, Germany, on Sunday, the Indian women’s hockey team suffered a narrow 3-2 defeat against the People’s Republic of China. This game marked India’s first match of their European tour, an essential part of their preparations for the upcoming Asian Games 2024.

As part of the tour, the team will play three matches against Germany (including one against China) and participate in a four-nation hockey tournament in Spain. Navneet Kaur was the standout performer for India, scoring both goals (in the 24th and 45th minutes), while Chen Jiali, Zhong Jiaqi, and Xu Yanan found the net for China, securing their victory.
Indian Women’s Hockey Team Engages in Fierce Battle, Falls Short against China
India, ranked 8th in the world, started the game with an aggressive approach, earning a penalty corner in the third minute. Unfortunately, the Chinese defense successfully defended against the threat. Shortly after, India committed a defensive infringement, leading to a penalty stroke for China, who capitalized on the opportunity and scored their first goal. Both teams had opportunities to score from penalty corners in the following minutes, but neither could convert.
The Indian women’s hockey team displayed a positive start to the second quarter. They launched a well-executed attack, resulting in consecutive penalty corners, although they couldn’t convert them into goals. Nevertheless, India maintained their offensive momentum and managed to equalize with a field goal from Navneet Kaur a few minutes later.
Buoyed by their positive performance, the Indian hockey team seized the lead in the 45th minute with Navneet Kaur scoring her second goal, putting the score at 2-1 in India’s favor. However, China swiftly responded and equalized through Zhong Jiaqi’s successful penalty corner.
China continued their momentum, and in the 51st minute, Xu Yanan struck to give them a 3-2 lead. Despite India creating a few opportunities in the final moments of the match, they were unable to overcome the strong Chinese defense.
Next, India will face Germany in consecutive matches on Tuesday and Wednesday, following which they will travel to Spain for a four-nation hockey tournament.
