The Ukrainian envoy asks for help from Prime Minister Narendra Modi after Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a military operation in Ukraine
Ukraine’s envoy contacted the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, urging the government of India to open a high-level dialogue between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the leaders of Ukraine (Ukrainian) and Russia to end the Ukraine-Russia crisis.
The Ukrainian envoy issued the request only minutes after a special military operation was deployed by Russian President Vladimir Putin into eastern Ukraine, with Donbas as its target. Russia has already made multiple airstrikes in multiple cities in Ukraine. The capital city of Kyiv reported multiple blasts on the central facilities of the city. Ukrainian cities are home to nearly 18,000 Indian citizens. Indian students in Ukraine have also reported hearing loud blasts on the city outskirts.
The envoy claimed that the Russian military operation aimed to “destroy” the state of Ukraine. Such a request urging a foreign prime minister’s intervention into bilateral disputes had been made by Ukrainian ambassador to Pakistan, Markian Chuchuk, on Wednesday on Pakistan’s President, Imran Khan’s arrival in Moscow.
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) announced that Russian troops are attacking Ukraine from multiple directions. The MoFA issued a statement saying, “Our partners should immediately enact a package of new sanctions. We also call on friendly capitals to continue strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities by providing weapons and military equipment.”
Ukraine’s ambassador Igor Polikha has made a forceful plea urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene in this moment of crisis and bring an end to the ensuing bloodshed. He said, “We are deeply dissatisfied with the Indian position. Already 10-15 people are killed. We are asking, pleading for the strong voice of India. In this case, Prime Minister Modi Ji can address Mr. Putin. He can address our President. This is not the time for protocol-bound statements. Your officials said they are closely watching the situation. This means nothing. India is the founder of non-alignment. We plead for the support of India. It’s a moment of truth and moment of destiny.”
Ambassador Polikha has also claimed that Russian troops have begun invading Ukraine from three directions on the ground.
