In a shocking incident, a woman teacher fell from an auto-rickshaw while trying to save her
mobile phone from snatchers on a motorcycle in New Delhi’s Saket. The incident occurred on
Friday afternoon near khokha market which is a bustling area, shedding light on the growing
rate of street crimes in Delhi.
The victim, identified as Yovika Chowdhary, lives in Delhi’s Neb Sarai and works as a school
teacher at Gyan Bharti School in Saket. According to Chowdhary, she was returning home from
her school around 3:15 PM and sat herself down in an auto-rickshaw outside PVR Saket. While
Passing through khokha market, 2 men on a Honda splendour motorcycle approached her from
behind in an attempt to snatch her phone from hand as per the victim’s FIR.
In an attempt to resist the assailants from snatching away her phone, she fell from the auto and
was dragged along the road. The fall left her injuries meanwhile the snatchers successfully
managed to take the phone away from the hands of the injured woman. The woman teacher
was left with a fractured nose and injuries to her body parts which were then treated at Max
Hospital Saket after being rushed from the spot of theft.
As per the police complaint filed by the woman, the victim identified the assailants as men
between the age group of 20-22 who rode their vehicle without any helmet. A case has been
registered under Indian Penal Code (IPC) section 379 of committing theft, section 356 of
assaulting or using criminal force against any person for stealing and section 34, when a
criminal act is done by several people in furtherance of the common intention.
Man involved in 200+ snatching cases arrested in Delhi
A 40 year old man identified as Ranjeet Singh alias Billa was arrested in May earlier this year.
Previously arrested for 40+ cases of which 22 cases are registered for robbery and snatching,
Ranjeet was released on bail in view of the pandemic to restrict the spread of virus, following
which he moved to his native place in Alwar, Rajasthan and later resumed his criminal activities
in Delhi.
The police recovered 9 gold chains that were snatched by Singh from places like Janakpuri,
Tilak Nagar and Hari Nagar in West Delhi. The police also said in its statement that he
purposely targeted West Delhi as he was well- informed about the place and rode expensive
stolen bikes to commit crimes.
