Former BJP minister, Swami Prasad Maurya, who allied with Samajwadi Party right before the election lost his seat to BJP’s Surendra Kumar Kushwaha in Fazilnagar assembly constituency in the Kushinagar district of Uttar Pradesh.
Samajwadi Party’s leader Swami Prasad Maurya, who is also a former Uttar Pradesh Minister in the Yogi Adityanath’s government has lost from the Fazilnagar constituency. It is interesting to note that Swami Prasad switched to the Samajwadi Party along with 4 other MLAs a month before the elections began in UP.
Fazilnagar constituency contested polling in the last phase of elections on March 3. It is an assembly constituency in the Kushinagar district, a part of the North-East region of the state of Uttar Pradesh.
Against Swami Prasad Maurya, BJP candidate Surendra Kumar Kushwaha won the Fazilnagar seat, by 45014 votes.
Swami Prasad Maurya
Former Member of Legislative Assembly in the Uttar Pradesh from Yogi Government switched to join Akhilesh Yadav a month before the elections started in February. He is an OBC leader and a 5-time MLA.
He allied with BJP in 2016 and aimed at drawing a major portion of OBC voters against Akhilesh’s SP. His withdrawal from BJP led to the conjecture that many OBC voters might turn against BJP. Further, his support was added with the thriving Akhilesh Yadav party too. Everyone portrayed his exit as a major loss in BJP supporters in UP.
However, the results depicted a different picture yesterday. Most of the leaders that left BJP to join SP have lost in their respective constituencies. But, the defeat of Swami Prasad Maurya has been a major setback for SP due to the huge position he held in his previous party.
The minister took on Twitter and accepted his defeat. He said, “Congratulations to all the winning candidates. I respect the people’s mandate. I have lost the election, but not strength. The campaign of struggle will go on.”
