When it comes to LGBTQ+ cinema, it has historically been overlooked, or LGBTQ+ characters have fallen into tropes that have failed to expand or serve a secondary purpose to central characters when they have appeared in mainstream media. There have been many years in which the LGBTQ+ experience has been conspicuously absent from mainstream cinema; however, the year 2021 has been a particularly strong and significant one. Eternals is a superhero film slated for release in 2021 that is based on the Marvel Comics race of the same name. Marvel Studios’ Phase Four film, Captain America: Civil War, is the twenty-sixth instalment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film was released on November 5, 2021, according to the studio. Chloé Zhao is in charge of the direction and co-writing of the film.
The Eternals is a new Marvel Studios film that introduces an exciting new team of Super Heroes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Eternals are ancient aliens who have been secretly residing on Earth for thousands of years. Titane is a body horror drama film written and directed by Julia Ducournau that will be released in 2021. A titanium plate is implanted into the head of Alexia, who is played by Agathe Rousselle in her feature film debut. Alexia was injured in a car accident when she was a child and has a titanium plate implanted in her head. Vincent Lindon, Garance Marillier, and Las Salameh appear as supporting characters. With its subversion of the male gaze and subsequent transformation into a lesbian love story, the film stands out among the other films released this year as being quite different from the rest.
