“I’m absolutely worried that failed states are breeding grounds for those types of people.” UK Defense Minister Ben Wallace, in an interview with Sky News Agency.
He exclaimed that Afghanistan is moving ahead toward becoming a breeding ground for militants like Al Qaeda. He said Al Qaeda would probably come back to Afghanistan. “It is spiraling towards a failed state.” He noted.
The United States has withdrawn most of its troops after a 20-year-long war in Afghanistan. This has allowed the Taliban forces to sweep across Afghan territory.
From 1996-2001, the Taliban controlled most of Afghanistan. But it was expelled by the US military for harbouring Al Qaeda chief Osama Bin Laden after the September 11 attacks on the United States of America.
Wallace said to the BBC that the pace of the Taliban’s advance had stunned the Afghan government and its western allies. He raised concerns that the world is heading towards a civil war.
The Taliban has almost taken control of Kandahar, the second biggest city in Afghanistan, and the town of Lashkar Gah. Britain is expected to deploy its military personnel to Afghan territory to help British nationals and local translators get out of the country.
