Restaurants Serve Drinks with Drugs: P C George, a senior Kerala politician, was arrested by police on Sunday for allegedly making inflammatory statements about Muslims. Mr. George was arrested in the early hours of Sunday from his house in Erattupetta in the Kottayam district, police said.
On Saturday, police filed a complaint against Mr. George, stating that his remarks during a conclave in the state capital incited religious enmity. On the instruction of state police chief Anil Kant, officers at the Fort police station started ‘Suo Motu’ proceedings against the former legislator.
Mr. George, who was charged under section 153-A of the Indian Penal Code (promoting enmity between various communities), is being transported to Thiruvananthapuram, police added. The former Congress lawmaker provoked outrage when he urged non-Muslims in Kerala to shun restaurants owned by members of the faith.
On Friday, while speaking at a function organized as part of the current Ananthapuri Hindu Maha Sammelan in Thiruvananthapuram, he said that tea laced with “drops inducing impotence” was offered at Muslim-run restaurants in order to make people “infertile” in order to “seize control” of the country.
The 70-year-old legislator, who served in the state Assembly for 33 years representing the Poonjar seat, had also asked non-Muslims to boycott companies owned by Muslims. His views were criticized by both the ruling CPI(M) and the opposition Congress.
