A bronze statue of Nadaprabhu Kempegowda will be unveiled soon at the premises of Kempegowda International Airport (KIA), situated on the outskirts of the city. He is believed to be the founder of Bengaluru and was a chieftain of the Vijayanagar empire. Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai has also announced that a Kempegowda statue will be installed inside the Vidhana Soudha premises within a year. He announced this at the 513th birth anniversary of Kempegowda.Â
A 108-foot-tall bronze statue of the Nadaprabhu is currently in the works at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport (KIA). The statue weighs about 2.2 lakh kilograms and has a 4,000-kg sword. The previous Chief Minister Yeddirupa played a very vital role in developing this project of installation of Kempegowda statue.Â
The Bengaluru Urban District Kannada Sahitya Parishath and Government Arts College, Bengaluru are also jointly organizing the birth anniversary celebration of Kempegowda and will conduct a seminar. The event will be held in the college premises.
Who was Nadaprabhu Kempegowda?
Nadaprabhu Kempegowda, a 16th century chieftain of the Vijayanagara empire, is credited as the founder of Bengaluru. It is believed that he conceived the idea of a new city while hunting with his ministers. He also marked the boundary of the city with building towers. Kempegowda is also known to have developed around 1,000 lakes in the city to cater to drinking and agricultural needs. He also belonged to an agricultural Vokkaliga community in Karnataka.Â
His name is used everywhere in the city of Bengaluru. The airport has been named after him. Bus Stands and even the main metro station in the city is called Nadaprabhu Kempegowda metro station. An arterial road in the old city is called the K G Road or the Kempegowda Road.
