Twitter announced today that its new “Unmentioning” feature is now available to all users on all devices. The new tool, which first tested in April, allows users to opt out of conversations they don’t want to be a part of.
“Sometimes you just want to see yourself out,” the social media Giant tweeted. “Control your mentions and leave a conversation with Unmentioning, which is now available to everyone on all devices.”
It is an upgrade above “muting a chat” as it eliminates the link to the specified person’s account and prevents others from referencing them on the same topic again.
Here’s more information on how to unmention oneself on Twitter and what happens once you do so-
How Twitter Unmentioning Functions, Unmentioning accomplishes three things:
- The link to your profile is removed from the original tweet and its replies.
- It prevents people from bringing you up again in the same conversation.
- It disables any further notifications concerning the conversation in which you were tagged.
- All users can now open up a prompt offering to “get you out of this conversation” by selecting the three-dot menu next to a tweet. The pop-up informs you that quitting the conversation will untag you in the answers, but your username will remain visible. When you remove yourself from a tweet, your handle turns gray, indicating to others that you’ve opted out of the conversation and cannot be tagged back in. Unmentioning yourself also disables notifications.
Last year, Twitter previewed its unmentioning tool and revealed an early concept design. At the time, the firm stated that it sought to assist customers in “controlling unwanted attention.”
The feature’s official rollout comes as the social network continues to integrate anti-abuse features into its platform.
Twitter began testing an anti-abuse feature dubbed Safety Mode in September, which allows users who are being harassed to filter out abuse.
Safety Mode monitors interactions and algorithmically eliminates abusive accounts. In February, the business expanded the Safety Mode test.
Another anti-abuse feature on Twitter allows users to specify who can react to a tweet. All of Twitter, persons you follow, or only accounts you mention are among the options. It has also generally tended toward offering users greater flexibility and authority, including the ability to erase old tweets from websites where they previously appeared.
