The Delhi Police’s crime division has dismantled a group of human traffickers who were buying and selling infants. A baby has been saved and seven people, including five women, have been detained.
Five women and two men were arrested in New Delhi on suspicion of being part of a gang that reportedly sold newborns to customers under the pretence of giving them away for adoption, and a two-and-a-half-month-old infant was also discovered.
According to them, the defendants are Salmi Devi, age unknown, Madhu Sharma, 50, Jyoti, 32, Barkha, 28, Veena, 55, and Bablu Shah, 28.
senior police officer, the arrests were made by a team of criminal branches that set up a trap at an auto stand in Uttam Nagar and captured four women and a guy who had come to sell the baby boy.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Authorities (Crime) Vichitra Veer, police called Madhu Sharma and her friend Veena after receiving information from ASI (Assistant Sub-Inspector) Jasbir Singh, and they agreed to produce a baby boy for 6.5 lakh rupees.
According to the DCP, a police officer who pretended to be a decoy made a deal with them.
“Madhu and Veena both made phone calls to Jyoti, who arrived with Barkha and Bablu Shah to deliver the newborn boy at the prearranged time and location. They all agreed to take the initial payment of Rs. 4 lakh and gave the infant to the fictitious customer.
The officer claimed, “Our team apprehended all four women and one man and seized money and a baby boy from their custody.”
He said that two further suspects from the same group, Pawan and Simran, were detained during the inquiry.
According to the investigation, Jyoti had been employed at an IVF (in vitro fertilisation) clinic, where she had contact with couples who were unable to conceive. That placed her close to the “potential clientele.” She interacted with the other defendants at various times, all of whom, according to the investigator, saw a chance to make quick money by selling infants to such couples.
According to the authorities, Jyoti cautiously approached the couples, ascertaining their needs before making an offer to sell them a kid and promising to handle all adoption-related issues if they expressed interest.
“They were acquainted with a Qutabuddin from Jharkhand who used to arrange for the transport of freshly born children from his state and deliver them to Simran in Delhi. The baby would subsequently be given to the worried customer by several intermediaries “said the DCP.
Qutabuddin had already left his location by the time a team was dispatched to Jharkhand to find him, according to police, who also stated that they were still making an effort to find him.
