The United Statesย Special Presidential Envoy for Climate (SPEC) John Kerryย is setย to visit India today, according to theย US State Department.
US and India to launch climate action and finance mobilisation dialogue during John Kerry’s 3-day visit to India
Indian Prime Ministerย announced during the Leaderโsย Summit on Climate hosted by Joe Bidenย last April that theย leaders from bothย countriesย willย engageย in a dialogue on the US-Indiaย Agendaย 2030 partnership.
The Climate Action and Finance Mobilization dialogue will facilitate India to mobilise investments and finances and enable green collaborations.
During his last visit to India in Aprilย 2021, John Kerry met withย importantย government officials of the country.
He informedย them about the US’ย interest inย helping Indiaย achieve its 450 GW goal ahead ofย COPย 26.
This meetingย was followed byย reiteratingย the same promise during a virtualย summit of 40ย globalย leaders hostedย by Joe Biden inย Augustย of thisย year.
During theย Leaders’ย Summit in August,ย India’sย Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the twoย countries’ย Climate and Clean Energy partnershipย toย helpย “mobilise investments andย enable greenย collaborations”.
Heย emphasised the importanceย ofย “affordable accessย to green finance andย green technologyย in developingย countries”.
He assured theย leadersย ofย India’s willingness to engage withย partners to createย “templatesย of sustainable development”.
THE US-SPECย TO STAYย INย INDIAย FORย THREE DAYS
Union Environment Minister Bhupendar Yadav held a telephonic conversation with Kerry on August 24ย on the same issue.
The minister took to Twitterย to announce hisย interaction with the US SPEC andย reiterated India’sย cleanย energy commitment.

The statement issuedย by the Ministryย of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFย & CC) referred to the dialogue as a “constructive tie-up” in “setting examples for other countries”.
John Kerryย is expectedย to visit the countryย today,ย onย September 12,ย andย the dialogue willย be held forย three daysย till September 14,ย informedย theย USย State Department last Saturday.
CLIMATE ACTION AND FINANCE MOBILISATION DIALOGUE
CAFMD is one of the two essentialย tracks of theย US-India Clean Energy Agenda 2030 partnership onย climate.
It was announced in Aprilย this year during a Leaders’ย Summit hosted byย USย President Joeย Biden.
It is partย of the US’ย larger strategy to facilitate bilateral and multilateral efforts to combat the climate crisis aheadย of the 26thย Conference of Parties.
COPย 26ย is expected toย be held in Glasgow, UK, fromย Octoberย 31 to November 12, underย the United Nations Frameworkย Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
The dialogue aimsย to help Indiaย mobiliseย its finances andย facilitate greenย collaborations, especiallyย greenย infrastructure.
Kerry will meetย key governmentย representativesย andย pressure the country to raiseย itsย globalย climateย ambition inย theย run-upย to COP 26.
The US envoy will also meet private sector leaders to ensure their commitment to speed up India’s clean energy transition.

The Joe Biden government reinstated the United States to the Paris Climate Agreement after Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew from the deal during his term.
Kerry’s visit is one of the country’s many attempts to ensure the success of the 2015 Climate Accord.
INDIA’Sย PARISย ACCORDย GOALS
The Paris Climate Accord aims to limit the planet’sย warming to “well below two degreesย Celsius” compared to the pre-industrialย temperature levels.
Under the Agreement, India has reducedย its greenhouse gas emissions to 33-35% from 2005ย levels byย 2030.
It is also on track to increase its non-fossil fuelย power capacity from 28%ย (in 2015) to 40% byย 2030 to reduce its carbon footprint.
According to India’s Prime Minister, the country will achieve its goals wellย before the target date.
