NATO asks the UN’s nuclear watchdog to inspect the Russian captured nuclear plant.
Says it is an urgent call amid high risk.
In several meetings on Wednesday, NATO said that it’s “urgent” to send the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to inspect the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant. The plant Russia seized in Ukraine.
NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg told the reporters in Brussels that Russia’s seizure of the Zaporizhzhia plant “poses a serious threat to the safety and the security of this facility (and) raises the risks of a nuclear accident or incident”.
“It is urgent to allow the inspection by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and to ensure the withdrawal of all Russian forces,” he said.
He eventually raised his concerns over how the Russian army’s presence in the nuclear area amid a rising war is a serious threat to the population of Ukraine.
He also told that the neighboring countries & also the international community could be harmed in case of any misshappen.
“Russian troops… now use the ground around the nuclear power plant as a staging area, as a platform, to launch artillery attacks on Ukrainian forces, and this is reckless, it is irresponsible,” he added.
Mr. Stoltenberg made these statements in several news conferences on Wednesday. The Presidents of Serbia & Kosovo, were also present.
There is a talk coming up on Thursday.
Where UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres will reach western Ukraine with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant
This nuclear plant is the largest in the whole of Europe. It was captured by the Russian forces in March, shortly after invading Ukraine.
Since then there has been a fear among the whole of Europe that the presence of the Russian army in between a raging war can lead to an incident or accident to rival that of Chornobyl in 1986.
Chernobyl Disaster 1986
In 1986 during a poorly designed experiment, the nuclear reactors in Unit 4 of Chornobyl exploded. The accident is rated as one of the largest now.
It led to killing around 50 people while dozens of others came in direct contact with the radiation.
Between 50 and 185 million curies of radionuclides (radioactive forms of chemical elements) escaped into the atmosphere.
Several times more radioactivity than that created by the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan.
