As the cost of pure gold medals steadily increased, making the awards crafted out of pure gold became a burden.
Women were allowed to compete in the Olympics at the Paris games in 1900, but at the end of the 1992 Summer Games, 35 countries had not fielded a single female athlete.
By 2010, only three countries had never sent female athletes to Brunei, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar.
