The world is taking harsh steps and sanctioning Russia in all possible ways following its invasion of Ukraine. Now Toronto International film festival [TIFF], has also announced that it will not let Russian film organizations and media outlets to participate in the event.
“TIFF will suspend participation by film organizations and media outlets supported by the Russian state, as well as Russian cultural ambassadors and delegations related to our festival,”
posted the organization on Twitter.
However, the organization said that it will include the Russian films by independent filmmakers in the festival.
Giving the reason, it tweeted,
“As an Arts organization dedicated to transforming the way people see through film, we support artists and their freedom of expression. TIFF will continue to include films from Independent Russian filmmakers in our programming at the festival and the year-round.”
Supports Ukraine amid war
“TIFF stands against the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the declaration of war this signifies. We hope for a swift return to peace and stability in the region. We extent our support to the people of Ukraine and those within Russia who oppose these attacks,”
added TIFF.
The new edition of Toronto International Film Festival will take place from 8 September to 18 September.
Earlier, several other organizations have backlashed due to Russia’s special peacekeeping military operation in Ukraine. This include Cannes Film Festival which will take place in May.
Many big film studios like Paramount, Disney, Warner Bros and others have stopped their releases in Russia.
