On Tuesday, the Cabinet committee cleared that Agniveers can get 15 years more in regular cadre after 25% retained recruitments.
On Wednesday, the Union education minister said they will consider the training recruits (Agniveers) who will be hired by the new recruitment model Agnipath for the short-term induction into the armed forces as credits for undergraduate programmes to help them pursue civilian careers.
Meanwhile, the Cabinet Committee on Security announced that only 25 per cent of Agniveers can get into the regular cadre and get 15 more years of service but only after the round of screening, so armed forces can get fitter recruits.
The ministry said Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) will offer the Agniveers a special three-year skill-based bachelor’s degree programme besides of their 4 years’ service.
All three-armed forces Air Force, Army, and Navy will sign an (MOU) Memorandum of Understanding with IGNOU to execute the scheme.

Agniveer can take as their Undergraduate course
The ministry said in the statement, “This scheme further got divided into two branches where 50% of credits will require skill training- both technical and non-technical and the other 50% will get an opportunity of grabbing a degree programme from wide variety of courses like languages, Economics, History, Political Science, Public Administration, Economics, tourism, Commerce, History, Political Science, Sociology, Mathematics, Jyotish, Agriculture, Vocational studies, environmental studies, and communication skills in English.”
Under the National Education Policy 2020, the programmes are aligned with the National Credit Framework/ National Skill Qualification Framework and University Grants Commission (UGC)’s norms. The candidate will get a Certificate after successfully completing their first and second year of degree courses and followed by a degree after completing a 3-year-degree course.

The framework has been recognized by all regulatory bodies including the All-India Council for Technical Education, National Council for Vocational Education and Training and UGC. The Ministry also said that the degrees will get recognition in India as well as abroad and they will be awarded as per UGC nomenclature.
