An ambulance with a patient and two attendants lost control and crashed into a toll booth in Karnataka’s Udupi district, killing all three and a toll attendant as well. The driver has been injured, the police said.
A CCTV camera at the toll booth displays the horrific accident unfolding on a wet road in the Karnataka coastal district where it had rained heavily. In the footage, some men who are alleged to be security guards and toll operators are seen rushing to remove three plastic barricades from one of the lanes upon seeing the ambulance approach.
The footage reveals one of the guards successfully removing two barricades before the toll plaza but the last barricade remains stuck near the boom barrier, from which a man manages to pull out of but only halfway. By then, the ambulance had almost reached the toll plaza.Â
Suddenly, the ambulance, a large, heavy van, skids on the wet road and swerves into the toll booth cabin. The video graphically shows the ambulance aquaplaning onto the wet road after the tyres lose traction. Aquaplaning typically happens when the tyre tread can no longer dissipate water, causing a loss of control as the tyres do not touch the ground.
A similar incident happened in April earlier this year when a newborn baby and an ambulance driver were killed when their vehicle which they were traveling in toppled near Malumichampatti on the outskirts.
