In a massive setback for former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackrey, 66 out of 67 Shiv Sena councillors joined hands with the rebel group of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
In the municipality polls of 2017, the Shiv Sena swept the elections and formed the municipal corporation of Thane.
In yet another setback for Shiv Sena supremo and former Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, 66 out of 67 Sena councillors in the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) have joined the rebel camp led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Sources say all 66 councillors met Chief Minister Shinde late Wednesday night at his residence before they joined hands with the rebel camp.
With 66 councillors joining hands with Eknath Shinde, the Thane Municipal Corporation has slipped out of Uddhav’s hands. The Thane Municipal Corporation is the most important Municipality Corporation after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.
The capture of Thane Municipal Corporation is the 1st big win for Eknath Shinde after he took charge as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra.
Before this development, Thackeray addressed the press and said Shinde backstabbed the Shiv Sena which was not at all expected.
The former Chief Minister further said; “ Shinde to whom I have given the responsibility of the party backstabbed me, while Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Congress remained with us.
It is painful to see that those (MLAs and ministers) who won due to Sena workers and got everything has left him”.
Earlier this week, the Chief Minister won the trust vote in the Maharashtra assembly with 164 MLAs voting for the new alliance and 99 for the MVA whereas 3 remained away from voting.
The three-party Maha Vikas Aghadi government in Maharashtra fell after Uddhav Thackrey resigned as Chief Minister on June 29 following a clash with the senior leader of his party Eknath Shinde.
A day after the resignation of Thackrey, Shinde in support of 40 Shiv Sena rebel MLAs, the BJP and Independents took oath as the Chief Minister with Devendra Fadnavis as his deputy.
But the political drama in Maharashtra is far from over as both Thackrey and Uddhav camps are claiming themselves as the original Shiv Sena, and are fighting over the symbol of the party.
Gulabroa Patil, an MLA from the Shinde camp assured that 12 out of 18 MPs and many other senior Shiv Sena leaders will soon join their camp.
