UK and few Commonwealth countries sees a wave of anti-monarchy protests.
Monarchy is a system of governance where in which total sovereignty is invested in one person, a head of state called a monarch, who holds the position until death or abdication.
We are not unaware of the demise of Queen Elizabeth II, the Queen of Britain. The moment the Queen’s death was officially announced, it spread everywhere like a wildfire. People mourned and offered condolences at the occasion.
I tried to avoid the news as there were plenty of coverage already made around this high-profile death. But what I couldn’t help addressing was the fact that this particular news has overshadowed all the other important news which need our instant attention.
While it is very obvious to cover the occasion of the Queen’s death, the rituals that follow and the related news, we as consumers need to be aware of what we seek for.
I blame the media as well as us as consumers for not being very thoughtful and irresponsible regarding the fact that important news related to global environmental emergency, humanitarian crises, wars, matters like community abuses, rapes, continuously growing GDP and inflation, territorial annexation, crimes against women and children by militant organizations are remaining unseen and ignored. People slammed monarchy by carrying #NotMyKing signs across the streets and shouting anti-monarchy slogans.
It is a belief amongst a lot of people and groups that Monarchy is a very conservative and outdated system of administration which should be abolished and brought to an end.
While it is highly debatable whether or not Monarchy is a threat to Democracy, the internet as well as the scholar world has a very binary approach to it. Some still consider Monarchy useful in several ways and some see it as a threat to the rights of an individual and the society.
My personal approach to the concept of ‘Monarchy’.
In my opinion, Monarchy in the 21st century is not a very practical system of governance. It robs an individual off his/her freedom to vote, which is threatening.
Monarchy takes away people’s right to freedom of speech because it does not give them the chance to choose their leader, neither does it have any probation where people are heard in situations of disagreement. They are left with zero choice rather being forced to accept the decision of the State.
Monarchy also makes a lot of room for exploitation of power and Imperialism if the administration goes to the wrong hands as it has no laws to check the decision of the Monarch. These decisions are more than often made on personal understandings and beliefs of the Monarch rather than on the basis of practical and social grounds including economy, democracy and needs of the State.
It destroys the theory of ‘Democracy’ which works on the principle that a state is made up of Individuals and it is necessary to protect the rights of those individual in order to create a healthy society.
It rather works on the principle that there is one head and every individual who is a part of the society he/she heads has to abide by his/her decision whether they are willing or not.
The Human World by now is very much aware of the consequences of a single entity rule.
It often ends up into Monopoly and misuse of power.
The consequences can be lethal and take away lot of lives as there are no limitations made to the workings and decisions of the Monarch under the Monarchy System.
Monarchy, Imperialism and dictatorship are three children from the same mother. These terms are separated by a very fine line, line as thin as a hair.
Monarchy is not very promising and people do not enjoy social security under it as the Monarch is not bound by any upper hand.
It is a system that supports the statement ‘for the King’ rather than ‘for the people’ which is exactly opposite to the concept of Democracy.
All these situations, if faced, can be a hindrance to a progressive society!
