Arvind Kejriwal attacked BJP as a “corrupt party” compared to his hardcore honest Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), talking about his Indian Institute of Technology education and that of his children from the same institution in his speech before a confidence vote that he won.
“I am an ordinary person and I belong to an ordinary, middle-class family. I went to IIT and did mechanical engineering. Today, whatever I am is because of the opportunities I got,” the Delhi Chief Minister said, addressing the special Delhi Assembly session. Arvind Kejriwal said that both his children also studied in IIT (Indian Institutes of Technology) and that he wanted to provide the “same level of education to all children in India”.
“Both my children studied in IIT and my dream is to provide to every child in India the same level of education my children got. The high quality of education that I got,” he said. Projecting AAP as an alternative to the BJP, Mr Kejriwal said there are currently only two parties at the national level that is the ‘Kattar Imandar (hardcore honest) Aam Aadmi Party and Kattar Beimaan (hardcore corrupt) Bharatiya Janata Party’.
“The absolutely corrupt party lacks educated people while a ‘hardcore honest’ party has people who have good education and genuine IIT degrees,” he said, taking a dig at BJP party members. He accused the BJP of horse-trading and misconduct, Arvind Kejriwal said that “They are now spending Rs 20-50 crore to buy MLAs. Am I doing anything wrong if I wish to build schools and hospitals?”
The Delhi Assembly passed Arvind Kejriwal’s confidence motion as five BJP MLAs staged a walk-out after their party colleagues were marshalled out of the assembly following an incident. AAP, which has 62 MLAs in the 70-member assembly, out of which, 59 were present today.
Arvind Kejriwal said the numbers have made it clear that the BJP’s alleged attempts to bribe his MLAs into switching parties and dislodge his government have failed.
The Chief Minister also said his party’s vote share in Gujarat has increased by four per cent after the Central Bureau of Investigation raids were carried out against his deputy Manish Sisodia. This percentage would increase by two per cent “if Mr Sisodia is arrested”, he mentioned.
“The CBI went on to raid Mr Sisodia, going to his village and searching his bank locker. CBI personnel said they did not find anything against him but are still under pressure to arrest him,” Arvind Kejriwal claimed.
“We brought the confidence motion in the Delhi assembly to prove that Operation Lotus will fail. None of our MLAs have switched sides,” Kejriwal said, referring to the term used by the opposition for the sabotage used by the BJP, whose election symbol has the lotus.
59 out of 62 AAP MLAs were present for the vote of confidence. Out of the three absent, two are out of India and the third, Satyendar Jain, is in jail. In total, 58 MLAs voted in favour of the confidence vote; one was the Speaker herself.
