Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot is most likely to be the next Congress President as the Gandhis seem inclined toward his appointment.
The Grand old party is set to hold elections by September 20 for the post of Congress President which is currently being held by Sonia Gandhi.
When asked about his opinion on Interim President Sonia Gandhi wanting him to be the next Congress President, the veteran leader said that they will try ‘till the last moment’ that Rahul Gandhi becomes the next President.
Gehlot said that his only two focus areas right now are; being the senior observer for the upcoming Gujarat elections and being the CM of Rajasthan.
He said that the party will use all means to make Rahul Gandhi the next President because if he does not take up the post, all workers will get demotivated and just sit at home.
Ashok Gehlot Statement:
“I am election observer in Gujarat and Rajasthan CM: these are the two responsibilities given to me by the party high command and, as of now, I am trying to fulfill these,” Gehlot told media persons, who asked him about his meeting with Sonia that led to speculation that there may have been a discussion on the possibility of him being the next party president.
Gehlot informed that Sonia Gandhi has gone abroad for a check-up. KC Venugopal and Gehlot paid a courtesy call to her before leaving for Gujarat.
About the speculations about him becoming the next Congress President, he said that nobody knows what’s going to happen and he himself gets to know these things from the media.
“Has anybody briefed you at AICC, no one has done that. Media keeps on speculating till a decision is made, neither you nor I can comment on it,” Gehlot said.
There have been speculations that the G23 group could also come up with a contender in the upcoming party elections. Other possible contenders could be Kamal Nath, KC Venugopal, Meira Kumari and Kumari Selja.
A Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting is going to take place on August 28 where final dates for the elections will be decided. Sonia Gandhi is expected to attend the meeting.
