Asian Cup 2022 be played in the T20 format
Asia cup 2022 will be played in the T20 format. The tournament starts on August 27, while the India Vs Pakistan match is scheduled to take place on 28th August.
The Asia cup 2022 kicks off on August 27 with a match between Sri Lanka and Afghanistan. On the other hand, defending champions India will kick-start their campaign with a match against arch-rivals Pakistan on August 28.
It is worth noting that the continental event was earlier set to take place in Sri Lanka but the economic crisis in the country saw the tournament being shifted to the United Arab Emirates. The gulf nation will be hosting the event across two venues- Dubai International Cricket Stadium and Sharjah Cricket Stadium.
The continental event will be played in the T20 format, featuring 6 teams divided into two groups at the start. In their respective groups, the teams will be playing each other once. The top two teams from both groups will then advance to the super 4s, where all four teams will be playing once against each other. The top 2 trans from the super 4s will advance to the final that is scheduled to take place on September 11.
Sri Lanka Vs Afghanistan
Afghanistan Won by 8 wickets with 59 balls left (106/2) (10.1)
Afghanistan established their dominance and hardly ever took its feet off the throats of the Sri Lankans. Sri Lanka, who are technically hosting this tournament, had some reprieve during a 44-run stand between Danushka Gunathilaka and Bhanuka Rajapaksa.
They were eventually blown away for just 105 runs. Afghanistan then put on a masterclass of chasing down a small total quickly and positioning itself well for net run rate. They chased it down with eight wickets and won the match with just one ball under 10 overs to spare.
They have chased down 106 in just 10.1 overs. Afghanistan has laid down an early marker in the 2022 Asia Cup. One must be naive to count them out. Sri Lanka has a lot of work to do if they are to progress. This is some morale-crushing defeat and they will have to beat Bangladesh now at all costs.
Asia Cup
The 2022 Asia Cup is the 15th edition of the Asia Cup cricket tournament, with the matches being played as Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) during August and September 2022 in the United Arab Emirates. Originally scheduled to be held in September 2020, the tournament was postponed to July 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
It was then rescheduled to take place in Sri Lanka in June 2021, before being postponed again. Pakistan was scheduled to host the tournament after retaining the rights to host the 2022 edition. However, in October 2021, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) announced that Sri Lanka would host the tournament in 2022, with Pakistan hosting the 2024 edition. India is the defending champions.
On 21 July 2022, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) informed the ACC that they would not be in a position to host the tournament due to the economic and political crisis in the country. On 27 July 2022, the ACC confirmed that the tournament would be played in the United Arab Emirates, with Sri Lanka Cricket serving as the tournament’s host. The fixtures for the tournament were announced on 2 August 2022.
In December 2018, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) were granted the right to host the tournament by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). However, it was unclear if the matches will be played in Pakistan or the United Arab Emirates. After the announcement was made, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) requested that the PCB change the event’s venue due to ongoing security concerns.
Pakistan last held a multi-team international tournament in 2008, with the 2008 Asia Cup. Since then, only a handful of international matches have taken place in Pakistan following the 2009 attack on the Sri Lanka national cricket team.
