With over 4 lakh people affected by the recent floods across 9 districts in Assam, the condition continues to be grim. In conversation with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Union Home Minister Amit Shah has assured him of complete support from the central government to address the flooding situation in the state. Additionally, Shah emphasized that the Modi government remains steadfast in its commitment to stand by the people of Assam during challenging circumstances.

He added that he has spoken to Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam and assured him of central assistance in all possible ways and that NDRF teams are already present on the ground, engaged in relief and rescue operations, and sufficient forces are on standby
Despite water levels starting to recede, the flood situation in Assam remains serious, affecting over four lakh individuals across nine districts, according to an official. As per the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), three individuals have tragically lost their lives in this initial wave of flooding in various parts of the state. The ASDMA report indicates that a total of 407,700 people have been affected by the floods in Baksa, Barpeta, Darrang, Dhubri, Goalpara, Kamrup, Lakhimpur, Nalbari, and Udalguri districts.
A red alert was issued in Assam.
Earlier in the week, The Bhutan Government and the India Meteorological Department(IMD) had predicted heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas, which might lead to increased water levels in an already flood-stricken Assam.
Several areas in Assam have experienced not only heavy rainfall but also consequential land erosion, landslides, and significant damage to infrastructure. The overall impact on the region’s infrastructure has been substantial and requires attention and rehabilitation efforts.
Incessant rain continues amidst the grim situation caused by the floods in Assam with the death toll rising to 3 and around 4 to 5 lakh people affected. The situation continues to be critical.
ASDMA Flood report
According to the flood reports of ASDMA, the death count increased to 3 in the past 24 hours when one more person died in the Nalabri district by drowning.
The impact of the floods is extensive, with the Bajoli district being the most affected, affecting around 2.2 lakh people. Barpeta follows with 1.04 lakh affected people, Nalbari with 40,688, Lakhimpur with 22,060, Darrang with 8,493, and Goalpara district with 4,750 affected individuals.
The floods have affected a significant number of areas in Assam. Specifically, 1,118 villages spread across 42 revenue circles in Bajali, Baksa, Barpeta, Chirrang, Darrang, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Goalpara, Golaghat, Jorhat, Kamrup, Lakhimpur, Nagaon, Nalbari, and Tamulpur have been impacted by the flooding.
The Brahmaputra River has surpassed the critical level at Neamatighat in the Jorhat district and Tezpur in the Sonitpur district due to the excessive rainfall over the week.
To assist flood-affected people, the district administration has established 101 relief camps and 119 relief distribution centres across 14 flood-hit districts. Currently, approximately 81,352 individuals have sought shelter in these relief camps.
Furthermore, in the past 24 hours, the floodwaters have breached one embankment and caused damage to 14 other embankments, 213 roads, 14 bridges, numerous agricultural bunds, school buildings, irrigation canals, and culverts.
