BAFTA 2022 pays tribute to Lata Mangeshkar and Dilip Kumar. The legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar and actor Dilip Kumar were awarded the “In-Memoriam” montage at the BAFTA film awards in London.
Two significant names from Bollywood, “The Nightingale of India”, Lata Mangeshkar, and “Tragedy King”, Dilip Kumar, were remembered as singer and actor, respectively, at the 75th edition of the British Academy Film and Television Awards and paid tribute in the “In-Memoriam” segment on the award night at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
To honour the work of those greats of cinema who have lost their lives over the past 12 months, BAFTA celebrated them at the award night.
The Guardian named the singer “The Nightingale of Bollywood” and The Times, London described the actor as “Bollywood’s answer to Marlon Brando”.
The legendary singer, who passed away at 92 on February 6 this year, was a Bharat Ratna awardee who had recorded an estimated 25,000 songs for over 1,000 Hindi films during her career span of 70 years. She was the first Indian musician who performed at the Royal Albert Hall, London, in 1974.
Dilip Kumar, who passed away at 89 on July 7, 2021, acted in some award-winning films like Ram Aur Shyam, Naya Daur, Shakti, Daag Kohinoor, and many others, which have kept the audience living in that era even today.
He was described as “a towering figure in Hindi cinema and a meticulously dedicated method actor” by The Times of London.
Indian fans on Twitter expressed gratitude to Bafta for paying tribute to the singer. A fan wrote, “her loss is irreplaceable.”

Other celebrities, including actor-filmmaker Sir Sidney Poitier, director Ivan Reitman, cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, actors Monica Vitti and Sally Kellerman, and singer Meat Loaf, were also honoured at Bafta during the “In Memoriam” segment.
Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog won the best film and best director awards, Will Smith have emerged as the winner of the Bafta and Critics’ Choice Awards, beating the best film actor, Benedict Cumberbatch.
