Stars and guests invoke the spirit of Coco Chanel and Audrey Hepburn in their colour combinations in recent Baftas
There aren’t many greater colour combinations in fashion history than black and white, which are associated with icons like Audrey Hepburn and Coco Chanel. Stars at the Baftas donned the tried-and-true formula on Sunday night at the award ceremony. The red carpet was an ocean of black and white.
The fashion at this year’s Baftas demonstrated how monochrome costumes can be highly trendy and thrilling even though black, white, and grey gowns are hardly the most original items to wear on the red carpet.
Renate Reinsve, who was nominated for the leading actress award for The Worst Person in the World, looked ethereal in a white Louis Vuitton gown with gold accents.
In the build-up to the Baftas, Caitriona Balfe wore some seriously stylish and sleek black outfits – and her red-carpet look was very much in the same wheelhouse. With collar detailing and statement shoulders, the black velvet dress looked particularly sophisticated with slicked-back hair and pearl drop earrings .
Drag performer Bimini Bon Boulash capitalised on two current hot trends: opera gloves and super-thin eyebrows with a Victorian-inspired white outfit.
The Evolution of Monochromatic Fashion
As Coco Chanel was experimenting with black and white designs in the 1920s, the style had its start. The goal was to make apparel more stylish, modern, and sophisticated. The style went out of style in the 1930s but came back in the 1950s when Christian Dior included it in his line.
Due to its adaptability and ageless nature, the monochrome outfit has been making a reappearance lately. Celebrities like Rihanna, Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, and Selena Gomez have all been spotted wearing it on red carpets or at award shows.
Celebrities Reminiscing Monotones
Just a year ago, large, ornate gowns became a red-carpet staple. Daisy Ridley updated her dress for 2022 with a sleek black bodice and a voluminous skirt. Her attire was also environmentally friendly because it was made from an old top and skirt that she had combined to create a chic new dress.
Grammy’s 2024: Mr Lacy has no bad habits when it comes to styling; he consistently pulls off a current appearance with a minimum of movements. He didn’t have a shirt to go with his double-breasted Saint Laurent Monochromatic suit, but he was holding a beautiful black purse like a chic uptown lady at a charity event. I follow my own rules, seemed to murmur his pointed white sneakers.
Going Monochrome on a Budget
Finding varying hues of the same colour or perfect colour matching for numerous things can be challenging when dressing in a monotone. Yet, there are a couple of methods to make things look shoppable without the help of a personal shopper.
First, and maybe most obviously, choose a colour before beginning your online purchasing spree. The ability to filter on many websites according to colour will make narrowing down your options simpler and less confusing. If choosing complementary or matching colours across different stores stresses you out, concentrate on one because you’ll frequently find a large number of goods in that one.
Wearing only black or all white is not the only aspect of the monochromatic trend. It involves putting on various tones of the same colour family. Red, blue, and green come in a wide variety of hues that can be paired together to make stunning outfits!
As a fashionista myself, who loves monochromatic looks per se, it would be wrong if I say, ‘monochromatic look is regaining popularity’ because it actually never went away to ever come back. There are millions of people who wear monochromatic outfits on a daily basis. Both day and night, they are ideal. These can be worn to casual date nights, business meetings, and weddings. And it doesn’t necessarily have to be so expensive, nowadays there are a lot of thrift stores which sell great monochromatic pieces for so less price.
