Same-Sex Marriage Bill rescinds the federal Defense of Marriage Act signed by Bill Clinton in 1996 which prohibited the government to grant permission for same-sex marriages that had been validly recognized as a state’s law. This law defines only the marriages between a man and a woman. The new law officially affirms to respect the interracial union and to honor the validity of the same-sex.
Just 10 years ago that same-sex marriage was only supported by the half of adults precisely 27% of the US adults according to polling by Gallup but in 2022, 71% of people said same-sex unions should be recognized by the law. That’s what the President said in ceremony on Tuesday, “Marriage is a simple proposition, who do you love and will you be loyal with that person you love, it’s not more complicated than that. The law recognizes that everyone should have the right to answer those questions for themselves without the government interference.” Joe Biden further said, “This law and love it defends strike a blow against hate in all its forms and that’s why this law matters to every single American.”
Cindy Looper and British singer Sam Smith performed in the presence of thousands of people who crowded to honor the community. It was a monument day for Senate Majority leader Chuck Schumer, his daughter and her wife are expecting a child soon. The lawmaker said, “Thanks to the millions out there who spent years pushing for change, and thanks to the dogged work of my colleagues. My grandchild will get to live in a world that respects and honors their mother’s marriage.”
Biden affirms that his administration includes the first openly gay Cabinet member, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and the first same-sex union person to receive Senate confirmation of Assistant Secretary for Health Rachel Levine. The same-sex community awaits for the growth and welcomed the legislation with overwhelming happiness.
