Previous such cases in Bihar
In Bihar, there has been a sharp increase in chimney kiln blast events. The blast incident happened first in Gopalganj and afterwards in Motihari’s Raxaul. 10 workers lost their lives in each accident. The safety requirements for chimney kilns in Bihar have come under scrutiny as a result of these tragedies. The first occurrence occurred on Friday night in the Gopalganj neighborhood of Ratansarai village, near the Barauli police station, when the chimney kiln caught fire as soon as it was lit. Munshi Harendra Chaudhary was killed instantly in the collision, while a worker died in Gorakhpur. 3 workers who were injured in the chimney fire have been sent to Lucknow for further care.
Zig- zag pattern authority mandatory
Following Gopalganj, the chimney blasts in Motihari have raised concerns about the construction standards of chimney kilns in the state. The accident took place as the chimney was not built in a zigzag pattern. The straight chimney kiln was built simply, whereas the Mining Department and the National Green Tribunal have granted authority to only run the zig zag chimney kiln.
Last year in February 2021, the National Green Tribunal had asked all chimney kiln operators to install zig-zag technology. So that air pollution can be stopped with this technology and safety standards can be strengthened. Zig-zag chimneys have a greater height and are made round inside. So that the heavy waste of the smoke coming out can remain inside.
