In order to curb the spread of rumors, videos, photos, and messages, and in response to incidents of arson, the Biren government has decided to prolong the suspension of internet services for an additional period of five days.
The Manipur government has recently issued an order to extend the suspension of various communication services, including mobile data services, internet, and data services like Reliance Jio Fiber, Airtel Xtreme Black, BSNL FTTH, and internet and data services through VSATs of Bharatnet Phase-II within the territorial jurisdiction of Manipur. The decision to impose these restrictions aims to curb the dissemination of information, videos, photos, and messages. The government has emphasized that any individual found guilty of violating these orders will face legal consequences, as stated in an official notification.

The initial suspension of mobile internet services was implemented on May 3, following widespread violent clashes in 10 out of the 16 districts of Manipur. These clashes occurred during and after the ‘Tribal Solidarity March,’ organized by the All Tribal Students’ Union of Manipur (ATSUM), to express opposition to the demand for the inclusion of the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribes.
Consequences of The Ban
The consequences of the internet suspension have been far-reaching, resulting in shortages of essential items, transportation fuel, and life-saving drugs throughout the mountainous state. The availability of banking services and access to ATMs has also been severely affected, exacerbating the hardships faced by the people of Manipur.

Amidst these difficulties, various entities including the opposition Congress, media outlets, and numerous organizations have been demanding the immediate restoration of internet services in Manipur. They emphasize the essential role that internet connectivity plays in facilitating communication, accessing crucial information, and maintaining essential services in today’s interconnected world. It is becoming almost impossible for the people of Manipur to do their daily tasks seamlessly without the accessibility of internet. They are bearing the brunt.
The impact of the prolonged internet suspension on the lives of the people in Manipur cannot be understated. The inability to access vital resources, communicate with loved ones, or conduct online transactions has exacerbated the challenges faced by individuals, businesses, and organizations across the state. However, the government remains steadfast in its decision, emphasizing the importance of restoring peace and stability before considering the resumption of internet services.

As the situation unfolds, the people of Manipur continue to grapple with the adverse effects of the prolonged internet suspension. While the government seeks to address the underlying issues and restore normalcy, the resumption of internet services remains uncertain. In the midst of this ongoing struggle, the collective hopes of the affected population are pinned on the government’s efforts to find a resolution that balances the need for information dissemination with the imperative of maintaining peace and stability in the state.
Print Media Affected
Print media in Manipur are facing a shortage of newsprints and printing materials due to the blockades on national highways orchestrated by protesters. The All Manipur Working Journalists Union (AMWJU) and the Editors Guild Manipur (EGM) jointly expressed concern over the internet services ban in Manipur, which has significantly affected the operations of both print and electronic media outlets.
Prior to the outbreak of violence, there was growing unease stemming from the eviction of Kuki villagers from reserve forest areas. This issue had sparked various smaller protests. Meiteis, who make up 53% of Manipur’s population and primarily inhabit the Imphal Valley, and Nagas and Kukis, comprising 40% of the population and residing in the hill districts, represent the major ethnic groups in the region.
