The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and Congress MP Mallikarjun Kharge argued in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday over the latter’s notorious “Has even your dog perished for the country?” comment.
The Lok Sabha was adjourned due to heated exchanges between BJP and Opposition members over remarks made by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, who said at a rally in Rajasthan that while the Congress stood for the country and helped achieve independence after its leaders made supreme sacrifices, “not even a dog of the BJP was lost” for the country.
The BJP slammed Kharge, with ministers like Piyush Goyel and Prahlad Joshi seeking an apology from the senior Congress leader. Kharge justified himself by claiming that what he said occurred outside of the House. The Lok Sabha’s Business Advisory Council (BAC) unanimously resolved to adjourn the winter session sine die on December 23.
BJP ‘s take on Kharge’s comment
Senior BJP leaders have requested an apology from the opposition party’s head, including federal ministers Piyush Goyal and Kiren Rijiju. Kharge, on the other hand, declined, claiming that words made outside Parliament could not be debated inside.
The “dog” comment has enraged the BJP, which has gone all out against the Congress president. Addressing the Upper House on Tuesday, Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha, Piyush Goyal, criticised the language used by Kharge and said he should apologise for seeking to “present lies before the nation.”
“I am outraged and want an apology… His use of filthy language represented his thoughts and jealousy…. He (Kharge) may be envious that his party is not welcomed by the public, but using such vile language is a disrespect to this House and all citizens “Goyal stated.
“After independence, Gandhi stated the Congress should be disbanded… Khargeji is a living example of that… and is demonstrating to the public that what Gandhiji said was correct… he is a national president who doesn’t know how to speak.” he said.
According to BJP spokesperson Harish Khurana, “The tone used by Kharge, the Congress president, for PM Modi demonstrates the grand old party’s mentality about India’s Prime Minister. You are disrespecting the country’s Prime Minister, not simply a leader; this is intolerable.”
“They (Congress) trash the Armed Forces one day, the Prime Minister the next, and when Pakistan makes disparaging statements, they don’t say anything. This demonstrates their animosity for Narendra Modi Ji, and it is not the first time.”
“The grand old party has developed a practise of criticising Prime Minister Modi. As a result, we condemn it and demand that Mallikarjun Kharge apologise for his remark “Khurana explained.
Mallikarjun comment over India -China clash
The Congress President also said that the leaders of our party gave their lives, what have you done? Has anyone in your house even died for the country? Has someone made any sacrifices? No. Regarding China, he said that we want to discuss China’s aggression but he (government) is not ready for discussion.
Taking a jibe at the government, he said that he talks like a lion outside but in reality he walks like a rat. We are with the country but the government is hiding information. Earlier, Kharge had tweeted that we are very proud of our Indian soldiers. The whole country unites and praises the bravery of the army. We all know that since April 2020, China is continuously trying to infiltrate inside our border.
Kharge had clearly said that, on behalf of the people of the country, we want a discussion in Parliament on China’s intrusion. He had said that on behalf of the country, we wanted the whole situation to be clear. We will not allow anyone to occupy the land of India. The whole country is united on this issue. But you have to tell the country clearly.
All the facts should be told for the sake of our soldiers who were martyred in Galvan. Discuss in Parliament. On the other hand, responding to the allegations of the opposition, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said in Parliament that if we were indifferent to China then who sent the Indian Army to the border. If we were indifferent to China then why are we pressurizing China for de-escalation and disengagement today? Why are we publicly saying that our relationship is not normal?
Clash in between statement and apology
After the BJP leaders demanded an apology from Kharge, Kharge replied that it would be tough for them if I repeated what I said outside. You want those who fought for the country’s independence to apologise. They accused the Congress of organizing the “Bharat Todo Yatra,” to which I retorted that Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi devoted their lives for the country. “Who from your side (the saffron party) has given life?” “Life?” “Life?” “Wholives””organizing
A commotion broke out in the House earlier in the day when Congress and BJP clashed over Congress MP Ajay Rai’s statement about Smriti Irani’s “latkas” and “jhatkas.”
The Opposition’s continuous requests for a discussion of the most recent border conflicts between China and India have caused several interruptions in Parliament over the past few days.
