In what turned out to be an argumentative exchange between the leaders of the two major parties, the upcoming assembly elections in Gujarat will have much to say on the future of the state’s electoral system.
Political tussle between AAP and BJP in Gujarat
In what can be described as a political tussle in the state of Gujarat, the two leading parties, AAP and BJP are monitoring and analyzing each other’s tactics to gain an upper hand in state politics.
Attacking the policies of Delhi’s CM Arvind Kejriwal, Gujarat BJP chief Chandrakant Raghunath Paatil criticized the bid to completely ban firecrackers in the national capital and reduced such people who were holding back citizens from celebrating their festivals freely as “anti-religious”.
Earlier this month, The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led Delhi government decided to impose a complete ban on the production, sale, and use of all types of firecrackers till 1st January 2024. The position which has been followed for the last two years includes the occasion of Diwali in order to regulate the declining quality of air and pollution in the city.
In effect, Gopal Rai, Delhi’s environment minister had recently warned about the consequences of breaking such a rule. In a report, Gopal Rai had recently addressed that “Production, storage, sale and use of firecrackers in the capital city will be punishable with a fine of up to Rs 5,000 along with three years jail under Section 9B of the Explosives Act”.

Speaking at a gathering in Rajkot on Saturday after a firecrackers show was being organized, Gujarat BJP chief Paatil hit out at Delhi’s imposition of a cracker ban and pronounced worries about a similar fate in Gujarat if AAP comes for power. Calling such measures as ‘anti-religious’, Paatil said “So please recognize such anti-religious people and those against firecrackers who stop us from celebrating our festivals”.
Looking forward to the upcoming Gujarat Assembly polls due this year, it has been seen that the famous AAP national leader, Arvind Kejriwal, is visiting Gujarat multiple times and working hard to garner support for his party.
Moreover, AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal had just questioned why common citizens who are worried due to inflation, should not get access to free education, treatment, and electricity and said that by calling such facilities as “freebies”, the common man should not be insulted.
Responding to PM Modi’s slamming of freebie culture, the AAP chief tweeted in Hindi, “People are quite worried due to the price rise. Why should they not get free education, treatment, medicines, and electricity? Politicians get so many facilities for free. Banks waived the loans of so many rich people.”
Aam Admi Party-led-Delhi government argued that the ban on crackers was imposed on the orders of the Supreme Court and the BJP leaders were showing disrespect to the order of the court.
Labeling the Delhi government for its ‘anti-Hindu’ outlook, other BJP supporters also targeted the policy of a complete crackdown on crackers and fireworks.
BJP MP Manoj Tiwari recently suggested that the chief minister, Kejriwal, should allow citizens of Delhi to burst crackers for two-three hours on the special occasion of Diwali.
Talking on the sphere of ground activities, Arvind Kejriwal is adamant about encouraging his party’s actions and has cast his major campaign around a series of promises like 300 units of free electricity per month, free education in government schools, improved access to hospitals, shops for unemployed youth, Rs 1,000 allowance to women and a monthly stipend for new lawyers.
While the two contending parties don’t shy away from positioning themselves as the most powerful, it will be interesting to note the results in Gujarat, where elections are due later this year and people await the benefits of ongoing opportunities.
