Black is an universal hue and celebrities are proving it at the OscarsĀ
On Monday morning, the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California, hosted the 95th annual Oscars. For the third time, comedian Jimmy Kimmel served as the event’s host for the star-studded occasion. Like every year, celebrities walked the first-ever champagne-colored carpet in elegance. The celebrities delivered on the fashion front, wearing everything from eye-catching, sparkly outfits to bright colours.
With a stunning black Alaia gown, Rihanna showed off her growing baby bulge. The all-black outfit had a full-sleeved top made of sheer mesh with a turtleneck and a leather bralette placed underneath. Again, Margot Robbie succeeded. During the 2024 Oscars, the actress made a statement with a revealing black gown by Giorgio Armani PrivƩ. She made an appearance on stage at the ceremony as she stood up to give an award after avoiding the red carpet.
Her off-the-shoulder, sequined, hourglass-shaped dress would have looked stunning against this year’s champagne-coloured carpet, which is the first time in 62 years that the awards show’s carpet hasn’t been red. She completed the ensemble with black Manolo Blahnik shoes and accentuated the dazzle with matching diamond jewellery, including rectangle drop earrings and a ring.
Kidman’s Armani PrivĆ© dress featured a thigh-high split to contrast the glittering black fabric. Her waist and shoulder were embellished with large, black flowers, and it had one sleeve.
Deepika Padukone made her Oscars 2024 debut when presenting an award. She attracted attention in a Louis Vuitton gown and a Cartier necklace. She finished off her ensemble with rings, a diamond bracelet, and black opera gloves. She looked regal in a velvet dress with an off-shoulder neckline.
The semi-sheer black gown worn by Kelly Ripa was created by Jason Wu and had a high neckline and a sheath form.
Olden days
The first Academy Awards ceremony was a small luncheon for 270 people from the entertainment industry, held on May 16, 1929, at the Hollywood Roosevelt hotel. The Oscars are now followed by hundreds of millions of people in much more than 200 nations. Nevertheless, one thing hasn’t altered over the years: the participants’ attire continues to draw just as much attention as the awards themselves.
Once again, the Oscars are among us. The red carpets leading up to the Academy Awards, however, have taken on a distinctive aspect this year thanks to actresses who are supporting the ground-breaking #TimesUp campaign by donning all black. The monochromatic colour scheme is intended to make a political message, but if the trend persists, it doesn’t exclude Best Actress nominees like Valentino’s longtime friend Meryl Streep from making a statement with their attire. Black gowns have been worn to the Oscars in some of the most famous Valentino styles.
Go no further than Reese Witherspoon’s 2002 dress for one illustration. While serving as the face of the #TimesUp movement, Witherspoon created a stir when she first appeared at the Academy Awards as a rising star

I’ll never forget Julia Roberts accepting her first Oscar for Erin Brockovich while donning a vintage Valentino gown, and neither has the fashion world. Back then and as now, the velvet and satin Valentino gown in black and white was classy and gorgeous.
Both eras have their own significance from silhouettes from the olden days to giving them new meaning and relevance. Some fashion statements will be forever iconic, and some are yet to be made iconic.
