Following the second round of the IPL mega auction 2022 in Bengaluru, fans and supporters of the four-time champion Chennai Super Kings (2010, 2011, 2018, and 2021) expressed their displeasure with the signing decisions made by the team during the auction. On Twitter, fans have been spreading the hashtag #Boycott_ChennaiSuperKings calling for a boycott of the team because it has signed a Sinhalese player.

Maheesh Theekshana, the mystery spinner, is a Sri Lankan player who has been picked for INR 70 lakh by Chennai Super Kings. Theekshana is a corporal in the Sri Lankan army. Fans, on the other hand, are outraged by the move and are slamming the team on social media.Â
During the military operation against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in Sri Lanka in 2009, Sinhalese soldiers suspected atrocities against Tamilians. Â
The hashtag is trending on Twitter, with more than 30,000 retweets so far.Â
“Remove the player from the franchise or Remove the word “Chennai” from your franchise name. If you feel this boy is more important for you than the emotions of Tamils, you don’t need to represent Chennai in IPL. @ChennaiIPL #Boycott_ChennaiSuperKings,” one of the fans tweeted.Â
Other retweets are calling for Theekshana to be cut from the team. Another fan’s retweet says, “Don’t try to normalize Tamil genocide in Sri Lanka. Remove this Sinhalese player from CSK team. #DontNormaliseTamilGenocide #Boycott_ChennaiSuperKings.” Â
