On Wednesday, China reported 20,000 cases, the highest since the start of the pandemic. Until March, China tried to keep daily cases low with lockdown’s, Mass testing and strict restrictions on international travel.
On Wednesday, China reported 20,472 cases, the National Health Commission said in a statement, adding that there were “no new deaths.”
Wu Qianyu, an official with the city’s health commission, told a briefing on Wednesday that Shanghai was in a “race against time” against the outbreak. The current outbreak has surpassed the number of infections found during the initial outbreak, which centred around Wuhan. The Majority of cases are asymptomatic.
Shanghai, China’s largest city, accounted for more than 80 percent of the national tally, city officials said on Wednesday. Shanghai remains the hotspot for the current outbreak, despite the lockdown of its 25 million people.
The lockdown was to cover the city in two phases, east and west. Most of eastern Shanghai, which was supposed to reopen last Friday, remains on lockdown along with the western half of the city.
Due to lockdown, complaints have arisen in Shanghai over difficulties obtaining food and daily necessities. There is also a shortage of beds in isolation wards as tens of thousands are being kept for observation.
