China last week launched its largest-ever air and sea drills around Taiwan in an angry response to a visit from US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the longest-serving US official to visit the autonomous island in decades.
Taiwan held an artillery drill on Tuesday to simulate defending against attacks as its top diplomat accused Beijing of preparing to invade the island after days of massive Chinese war drills.
Taiwan lives under the constant threat of invasion from China, which views its neighbor as part of Chinese territory that will one day be taken away, if necessary by force.
“China has used drills from its military textbook to prepare to invade Taiwan,” Foreign Minister Joseph Wu told a news conference in Taipei on Tuesday, accusing Beijing of using Pelosi’s visit as a pretext for military action.

Soldiers fired from shells hidden on the coast, hidden on the road leading to the popular beach destination of Kenting. The exercises, which will also take place on Thursday, involved the deployment of hundreds of soldiers and about 40 howitzers, the army said.
The anti-landing drill came after China extended joint air-sea drills around Taiwan on Monday, but Washington said it doesn’t expect an escalation from Beijing.
“I’m not worried, but I’m worried that they’re moving as much as they do. But I don’t think they will do more than what they are doing,” Biden told reporters at Dover Air Force Base.
Taiwan’s Wu on Tuesday condemned Beijing for continuing military exercises around the island, accusing it of trying to control the Taiwan Strait and waters in the wider Asia-Pacific region. On Tuesday, the Chinese military released more details about the anti-submarine drills it conducted on the island the previous day.
The People’s Liberation Army’s Eastern Theater Command said the drills aimed to improve the ability of air and sea units to cooperate in hunting down submarines in international waters.
The scale and intensity of China’s drills and its withdrawal from key climate and defense talks have sparked outrage in the United States and other democracies.
Wow, this is amazing! Pink Floyd's Roger Waters to CNN: "[China] is not encircling Taiwan, Taiwan is part of China! And that's been absolutely accepted by the whole of the international community since 1948.

But Beijing on Monday defended its behavior as “firm, forceful and appropriate” in the face of the US provocation.
“(We) are just giving the perpetrators a warning,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said at a regular briefing, promising that China would “resolutely shatter the illusion of the Taiwanese authorities that the United States will seek independence.” will.”We urge the United States to seriously reconsider and immediately correct its mistakes.” started as a game plan in preparation for an invasion of the autonomous island.

Joseph Wu, who offered no timeline for a possible invasion of Taiwan, which China claims as its own, said Taiwan will not be intimidated even if exercises continue, with China often violating the unofficial cross-straits midline.”
China has used the drills in its military manual to prepare to invade Taiwan,” Wu said at a news conference in Taipei.

“It conducts large-scale military exercises and missile launches, as well as cyber-attacks, disinformation, and economic coercion to erode public morals in Taiwan. Measures to ruin the long-term status quo cross-strait.
Such moves threatened regional security and provided “a clear picture of China’s geostrategic ambitions beyond Taiwan,” Wu said, urging greater international support to prevent China from effectively controlling the strait.
China’s Taiwanese official responded to Wu’s Comments, saying he is a “die-hard” supporter of Taiwan’s independence, and his comments “distort the truth and obscure the facts.”
A Pentagon official said Monday that Washington stands by its assessment that China will not attempt to invade Taiwan for the next two years.
Wu spoke as military tensions escalated following the scheduled end of four days of China’s biggest-ever exercises around the island on Sunday, drills that included ballistic missile launches and simulated sea and air strikes in the skies and seas around Taiwan.

Pelosi said Tuesday that her visit to Taiwan was “absolutely worth it” and had tough, tough words for Beijing.
“We cannot allow the Chinese government to isolate Taiwan,” he said in an interview with NBC News. China managed to exclude Taiwan from the World Health Organization, he said, but “they won official next say who can go to Taiwan.”

His visit followed President Joe Biden’s direction that the United States would focus on Asia-Pacific, and he has overwhelming bipartisan support in the US Congress, he said.
