A new report from the United Nations warns that the world’s efforts to slow climate change are not enough and are failing to match the reality of the situation.
It has been yet another season of climate chaos all over the world, from heatwaves and droughts in China to destructive floods in Pakistan. Experts warn that it is a now or never situation for countries around the world to take action.
According to a report by the UN’s World Meteorological Organisation published on Tuesday, there is an increasing disconnect between what actions countries should take and the reality of the situation to avoid the worst impacts of climate change.
To keep the global temperature rise under 2 degrees Celsius, the upper limit of warming in the 2015 Paris Agreement, countries’ targets to decrease their planet-warming emissions over the next 10 years need to be four times as high.
According to the report, to meet the primary goal established in 2015 to keep warming below 1.5-degree celsius, Targets need to be seven times as great. The report of this year on climate change still shows that the world is not on track yet.
The report not only mentioned several instances of disastrous climate change impacts this year like droughts in China and the U.S. and floods in Central Asia but also warned that there is a lot worse to come in the next decade and beyond if national policies are not suitably altered to match what the climate change crisis needs.
