According to a study from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), at least 6.5% of the Covid 19 patients have died after discharge. 17.1% of the reported patients suffer from ongoing health issues even after a year of being discharged from the hospital.
The study that was conducted between September 2020 and February 2024 analyzed the data that was collected from 31 hospitals under the registration of National Clinical Registry for Covid-19 patients.

The results of the study that the ICMR conducted was published in the Indian Journal of Medical Research (IJMR). The aim of the study was to understand the factors that contributed to the mortality rate among the covid-19 patients after discharge. The main focus was put on the age group of 18-45 years.
14,419 Covid 19 Patients were Followed for the Study
The test was based on the three-nested control analyses where the covid-19 patients who had died after discharge and who had remained alive were studied. The study by ICMR matched the date of the hospital admissions and conducted various other comparisons.

The 14,419 patients who had accepted the offer were followed up between 4 weeks and 1 year after their discharge from the hospital. Among these covid-19 patients, 932 or 6.5% were reported dead after discharge, whereas 93.5% remained alive during this 1 year study period.
The post-discharge mortality rate was marked at 6.5%. Age played a crucial role in the rate of mortality among these patients. The age groups of 18 and under, 40 to 59, 60 and above showed an increasing ratio of adjusted odds for mortality, according to the study.
The mortality odds also contained the male gender, covid 19 patients who were moderate to severe level, and the presence of the co-morbidities.
Several Factors were Connected for Higher Odds of Post-Discharge Mortality
The higher odds of post-discharge mortality were connected with the history of moderate to several covid 19 cases and the presence of co-morbidities in the 18 to 45 age group. Amongst these covid 19 patients, 17.1% reported a Post Covid Condition (PCC) where the patients had indicated persistent health issues after recovery.
If the death of the patient occurred after the first follow up by the researchers, it was due to the association with co-morbidities and PCC. The study mentioned that moderate to severe cases were linked to post-discharge all-cause mortality, which is an indication of the lingering damages due to Covid 19.
Taking the vaccination before any infection of covid 19 provided about 60% protection against post-discharge mortality. PCC might have long term effects on the covid 9 patients that can be marked as deleterious, inclusive of mortality. To understand that measure, further study has been warranted by the ICMR.
Death was more common amongst the male covid 19 patients, who were above the age of 40 years, according to the ICMR study.
The results were based on the patient who had been hospitalized and cannot be generalized for all Covid 19 patients.
Covid Variants Evolve 3x Faster in Deer
Another study that has been published in Nature Communications, has found that the white tailed deer that inhabit Ohio, US, have an increased rate of being infected by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. This is the virus that causes Covid 19 patients to suffer.

The viral variants of Covid 19 have been found to evolve 3 times faster in these deer species than in humans. 30 infections of covid have been recorded in these deer in the US. The virus in the Covid 19 patients was used to introduce this virus to the deer species.
1,552 nasal swabs were collected from the free-ranging deer between November 2021 and March 2022 to check for Covid 19. More than 10% of these samples came out to be positive for SARS-CoV-2 virus.
