A girl in Meerut was abducted and raped at gunpoint. This terrifying incident took place at a village in Sarurpur on Friday where the girl was abducted by three men when she was going to her farm. The woman was dragged to a house by three men and was raped at gunpoint.
According to Times Now report, one of the accused men raped her in the house while the other two men waited outside to keep a watch. The victim was also threatened by the accused that they would kill her if she informed anything to the police or her family about the incident.
Following the incident, the victim came to her house and unfolded about the tormenting incident to her parents. Later on, her parents took her to the Sarurpur Police station and filed a complaint against the accused.
Sarurpur police of Meerut district took charge of the incident and booked a case under the three accused and launched a manhunt.
It is petrifying to note, a similar incident took place during the first week of march where a college student was abducted and gang-raped in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh.
According to the Times of India report, the woman living in a village under Sardhana Police Station travels to Khatauli, Muzaffarnagar for her classes. Five accused abducted the victim and took her to Delhi where she was gang-raped. The accused also threatened the victim to not inform anybody about the incident and dropped her off at Meerut.
Crime against women in UP does not stop with these two incidents alone. ‘n’ number of excruciating events are happening day by day. The state has been becoming popular in recent times for its increased number of crimes against women. During the pandemic, domestic violence cases against women had seen a surge across the country. Especially, the state of UP accounts for half of them.
NCW’s Report
According to the National Commission for Women (NCW), during the year 2021, pandemic year, nearly 31,000 complaints, the highest since 2014, were recorded regarding crimes against women. In which, half of the complaints were from UP.
NCW report states that there had been a 30-percentage rise in crime against women when comparing the numbers from the previous year. 23,722 complaints were recorded in the year 2020 whereas 310,000 complaints had been recorded in 2021. Of which 1,819 complaints account for outraging the modesty of women and molestation. And 1,675 complaints were registered for rape and attempted rape.
Crime against women in UP
UP accounted for the maximum number of crimes against women which is 15,828 complaints, according to the NCW’s report. Of which the highest number of complaints are filed regarding the right to live with dignity and domestic violence.
One of the most distressing crimes against women would be the hathras rape case which got worldwide attention on UP. Until now, it kindles the emotion of trauma and agony. It was during the time of the case, the Hindu monk turned politician, UP Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath’s controversial views on women got critics from all over the country.
He was criticised widely for the essay published on his website in 2014 stating that women do not need independence but need to be protected.
Though it is a positive sign to realise that more women are coming forward, unlike a few years ago, to file complaints, it is saddening to notice that the number of crimes against women is soaring.
