Goa Police and Mumbai Crime Branch work together to apprehend a wanted criminal hiding out in Goa. Man who was wanted for over 30 horrific crimes was finally arrested due to the joint efforts.
Goa Police and the Mumbai Crime Branch, together, in a joint operation on Sunday, arrested a wanted criminal from Mumbai.
Arrested in Panaji, the man was allegedly involved in 30 horrific crimes.
The police identified the man as Vikrant, also known as Vicky. They caught him when he was in possession of a live firearm.
Shobhit Saksena, Superintendent of Police, North Goa, told reporters that the Panaji Town Police Station and the Navi Mumbai Crime Branch apprehended the wanted man.
They carried this out through a late-night operation that consisted of meticulous planning.
Further he added that the name of the criminal is Vikrant or Vicky Dattarey Deshmukh, who is a most wanted man in Mumbai.
The police state that Deshmukh was involved in multiple heinous crimes around Maharashtra. He was wanted by the Nerul Police Station in Mumbai for alleged murder.
Further, he was also in an ongoing case under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act.
What happened in Goa?
Investigators from both Mumbai and Goa played a game of hide and seek with the criminal for hours.
Deshmukh continued to evade them until he was finally caught after hours of chasing him. This was done through a well connected matrix of a police network.
Superintendent Saksena further stated that the police were acting on very specific information. Later a team was formed and several traps were laid for the criminal.
Eventually, the criminal was chased down with him having a high possibility of being in possession of a firearm. After a long chase, the police finally caught the criminal.
Consequently, as suspected by the police, the accused was indeed carrying arms when the police nabbed him.
On his person, he had a country-made pistol with five loaded rounds as well as cartridges. The police also confiscated the car in his possession and a few mobile phones.
Coordination between Goa and Navi Mumbai.
Under Section 3 R/w 25 of Arms Act 1959, a criminal case was registered at Panaji Police Station.
The operation could not have been conducted without the close coordination between the two teams.
Goa Police was in close contact with the Navi Mumbai Crime Branch team which was led by Senior Vijaysingh Bhosle.
However, this arrest comes merely weeks after the Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant spoke against crime. He said that the state has a high crime detection rate and further no criminal will be spared.
At the time of this statement, the CM was speaking in response to a few reporters’ questions on the alleged rape of a British woman in North Goa district.
The police have since increased security checks in and around the main spots in Goa as the tourist season slowly picks up.
Anti-crime measures taken.
The SP added that they are also closely monitoring casinos in the state. All systems are in place to keep a record of all visitors, along with a well equipped CCTV setup.
Moreover, he urges other commercial establishments like clubs, restaurants, shopping centres and so on, to also have similar systems in place.
Systems where they can record the entries of people visiting is something that discourages someone from doing anything illegal.
Lastly, he said that in the past few months, the patrolling in North Goa has also intensified.
This intense increase in security and scrutiny is to crackdown on the criminal network in the state. It is done as a part of the anti-crime efforts in the state.
Goa, being a hotspot for tourists, is susceptible to syndicated organised crime as well as petty ones.
Finally Superintendent Saksena said that the criminals coming to Goa should not be of the misconception that they can hide out in Goa and stay there.

He also added that they were implementing a ‘Know your neighbour’ and ‘Know your police officer’ campaign.
They launched this campaign with the sole intention of receiving any information of possible criminals hiding in Goa.
