Disney+ now shakes hands with the most rising content in South Korea, i.e., K-Drama, under the influence of the “Hallyu Wave,” which means Korean wave. They announced their new venture in South Korea in November 2021 which is Disney Korea fully dedicated to Korean content. Disney+ welcomes 20 new Korean dramas in 2022. They previously said they would release over 20 Korean titles this year, including at least 12 Korean originals.
Recently, Disney+ released their first set of Korean dramas, including Snowdrop, Grid, Rookie Cops, Sixth Sense Kiss, and Outrun by Running Man. Of those, Snowdrop, Rookie Cops, Outrun by Running Man, and Grid have already been released to the public and have already created a huge impact on the audience. Disney+’s new show Crazy Love has been aired on March 7th, which has already attracted viewers’ attention. It was produced by Arc Media and will air on Korean broadcaster KBS.
Jessica Kam-Engle, Disney’s head of content and development in APAC, said that they are really excited about bringing their curated collection of unexcelled Korean stories that they believe will engage viewers all around the world. She also added that their focus is on quality storytelling and unveiling narratives that have great emotional and cultural impact.
Previously, Netflix explored the world of Korean dramas and it looks like it really brought the Korean culture into more light as their K-drama, Squid Game, smashed all of their records. The show “All of Us Are Dead” equally created buzz around the globe. The impact of the Korean shows have gone through a huge transformation due to the rising popularity of Korean culture all over the world. It has swept the entertainment world in a positive way. From Squid Game to Sweet Home, these are some of the most popular Korean shows streaming on Netflix.
Since the premiere of Snowdrop, starring popular actor Jung Hae-in and Jisoo of Blackpink, it has turned into one of Disney+’s main five most-watched shows in a larger part of Asia-Pacific, and it is the streamer’s second most-watched show of all time in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand.
Although the show has produced controversy in South Korea for its depiction of an autocratic period, some critics have publicly denounced it as historically misleading and politically insensitive. But it did not affect the success of the show globally.
The new and upcoming originals of Disney+ contain Big Mouth, Soundtrack #1, and The Zone. A romantic drama, Crazy Love, produced by Arc Media has already released on 7th March and its already picking interests from viewers. Disney also promises to release over 50 Asian originals by the end of 2022.
