This is not the first time this region is having a series of tremors. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are prone to earthquakes as they are high-seismic zones.

The Himalayan seismic belt extends to Andaman and Nicobar Islands. This belt is the most seismically active belt in the world. The country has witnessed a lot of devastating earthquakes in the last 2 decades.
These temblors include Uttarkashi(1991), Chamoli (1999), Sumatra(2004), Muzaffarabad(2005) as well as Nepal- Sikkim(2011).
The activities along this seismic belt show the spatiotemporal distribution of the quake during various periods of time.
NCS report about the earthquake
The national center of seismology (NCS) has reported that the depth of the earthquake was 30 km. It occurred in the early morning at 8:05 AM. This happened 187 km southeast away from Port Blair.
There was another quake earlier that day. It was at 5:57 am. The depth of this tremor was 44 km. This was 215 km southeast of Port Blair.
