Russia has launched an assault to capture the eastern Donbas region, says Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Ukraine. According to the sources, Moscow bombarded the cities on Monday. He added that “the battle for the Donbas has begun.”
As Russia breaks through from the Ukrainian front line in the eastern Donbas region, Oleksiy Danilov, Ukraine’s top security official, The offensive has been delayed after Russia failed to seize Kyiv. During the initial stage, Russia wanted to capture the major cities and topple the government.
But after strong resistance, Russian officials say the objectives of the first stage are accomplished. With this, they accounted for a plan, stating the invasion was towards the “liberation” of the Russian-speaking Donbas region.
Vladimir Putin, the Russian President, said that this was an attempt to demilitarize Ukraine.
Attack on Donbas Region
On Monday, Russia took out its rockets and fired at several places in the east, killing eight people in Luhansk and the Donetsk area. Along with killing seven and injuring eleven in western Kyiv during Russian strikes, the city with the most attacks has been evacuated.
“The situation was hell with constant firing in some cities,” the Luhansk governor said. In the city of Kharkiv, civilian evacuation is being done in the area of the intense attacks or are expected.
According to Russian defense officials, forces have hit hundreds of military targets in the cities of Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk, and Mykolayiv.
Volodymyr Zelensky on eastern Donbas attack
Zelensky said that he and his forces were going to defend, not give up. Adding,” A very large part of the entire Russian army is now focused on this offensive. No matter how many Russian troops are driven there, we will fight.”
According to sources, Ukraine has 40–50,000 soldiers in Donbas. This attack marked the second phase of the war, said Zelensky. Adding, “Believe in the army.”
With this, Russia continues to target the south-eastern city of Mariupol, allowing its troops to complete a land bridge between the Crimean and forces in eastern Ukraine. Ukrainian officials claim that Russian warplanes are preparing to drop four-tonne bombs on Apostol Pant, the final holdout of Ukraine.
