On Sunday, Russian and Ukrainian troops fought in close-quarter fighting in a city in eastern Ukraine. As Moscow’s soldiers attempted to acquire strategic footholds in the region against robust Ukrainian opposition.
The Russian military is attacking the eastern city of Sievierodonetsk, according to Ukrainian regional officials. They are knocking off power and mobile communications and terrorizing inhabitants who haven’t fled.
The industrial city of Sievierodonetsk has emerged as the epicenter of Russia’s campaign to seize Ukraine’s industrial Donbas region. Russia has also stepped up its efforts to seize adjacent Lysychansk, where Ukrainian officials say they have been shelled constantly.
Russia is concentrating its efforts on seizing areas of both countries that are not already under the grip of pro-Moscow separatists. In recent days, Russian forces gained tiny gains as bombardments ate away at Ukrainian strongholds, trapping residents in basements or urgently trying to flee.
Attacks on military sites across the country resulted in civilian casualties as well. On Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the situation in the east as “extremely tough” and “indescribably terrible.” According to him, the Russian army is “trying to squeeze at least some outcome” by focusing its attacks there.
Due to the threat, a humanitarian center was unable to operate, and telephone service and electricity were also disrupted. In order to access water from a half-dozen wells, residents risked being shelled.
According to Mr. Striuk, certain supply channels were operational, and wounded people could still be evacuated. He estimated that 1,500 civilians perished in the city, which had a prewar population of roughly 100,000. As a result of combat, a lack of medicine, and diseases that could not be treated.
Crimea’s hospitals are overflowing
According to the Regional Governor, a Russian shell hit a high-rise apartment building on Saturday, killing one civilian and injuring four others. According to him, a nearby cinema and 22 other residential buildings were also damaged.
In an operational update, the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces stated that the enemy is strengthening its units. It is attempting to establish itself in the area.
On Saturday, Moscow claimed to have captured Lyman, but Kyiv authorities refused to recognise the assertion. Heavy fighting was underway near Donetsk, the provincial capital, according to the Ukrainian army. Russia attempted an offensive around Bakhmut, in the neighboring Luhansk area, on Saturday night, but was forced back, according to the report.
The military hinted at significant levels of losses suffered by Moscow in the same operational update, alleging that civilians were no longer admitted to hospitals in Russia-annexed Crimea because beds were needed by injured forces.
Russian airstrikes on Ukraine’s northern Kharkiv and Sumy regions resumed overnight, according to Ukrainian official sources. On Sunday morning, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine claimed that Russian shelling had ignited fires in the area of Kharkiv, the country’s second-largest city.
After Ukrainian fighters pushed Russian forces back from locations near Kharkiv several weeks ago, Russia has maintained a bombardment of the city in northeastern Ukraine.
