Indian delegation to COP27 will be led by Union Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav. The global climate conference is scheduled to be held from 6-18 November, 2022 at Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, where India will raise concerns on climate finance for the developing countries. The information of the same was provided by the Union government via press release.
The conference is the 27th edition which will be witnessing global leaders to address the much-needed environment issues. India will further invite the other nations to join the – LiFE movement – Lifestyle for Environment, which is a pro-people & pro-planet effort that seeks to shift the globe from mindless and wasteful consumption to mindful & deliberate utilisation of the natural resources.
India’s call on current climate change finance mechanisms
“India will be supporting the Egyptian Presidency, for a plan of action which answers the requirements of the developing nations. Adaptation as well as loss & damage are 2 issues at the centre of attention, & progress on these two issues will complement each other. Loss and damage must also be on the agenda list of – COP27 & there must be particular progress on the issue of loss & damage finance. The existing financial mechanisms, such as – GEF, GCF & Adaptation Fund, under the Convention have not been able to mobilise or deliver the funds for loss & damage because of climate change. These mechanisms are under-funded, accessing funding is cumbersome and time-consuming, & most of the funding is for mitigation. Adaptation funding is highly inadequate & loss & damage funding is perhaps none at all”, cites the official statement released.
In relation to the above statement, the press release notes that the circumstances led China and G77 to propose adopting an agenda related to “loss and damage finance”, adding that now is the time when this issue is required to be addressed as it rightfully deserves.
Climate change is indeed one of the crucial issues which need to be addressed immediately.
What does India look forward to from COP27?
- Climate Finance for the developing states
- Strengthening of the financial mechanisms of UNFCCC imperative to meet the climate finance delivery goals
- Progress on actions, indicators as well as metrics required on the Global Goal on Adaptation
India further has supported the decision of addressing COP27 as COP (Conference of the Parties) of “implementation”, named by the Egyptian Presidency, noting the name very well justifies the situation, as since the last meeting, COP 26 in Glasgow the world saw the gap between the statements and actions of developed nations.
The press release then cites, “The Work Programme on Enhanced Ambition in Mitigation and Implementation cannot be allowed to change the goal posts set by the Paris Agreement. The GST process and the other mechanisms of the Paris Agreement, including enhanced NDCs and submission of the long-term low emissions development strategies, are sufficient. In the Mitigation Work Programme best practices, new technologies and new modes of collaboration for technology transfer and capacity building may be discussed fruitfully”.
India’s commitment on climate change
The government is assured to take appropriate measures on climate change, and ensure its commitment for the same.
“India is committed to both domestic action and multilateral cooperation on climate change, and will continue to fight all global environmental concerns in the call to protect humanity’s planetary home. But global warming also warns that equity and international cooperation, leaving no one behind, hold the key to success, where the most fortunate must lead the way”, cited the government in a press release.
COP27 accused of hypocrisy
Climate activists have accused COP 27 of hypocrisy as it is being sponsored by Coca-Cola, which is the leading plastic-polluter in the world. This deal gathered huge criticism from campaigners all across the globe, calling it “undermining” the efforts or meaning of the climate emergency summit.
Apart from this, earlier, the soft-drink firm admitted it uses 3 Million tonnes of the plastic packaging in a year. Is the UN trying to portray the company as eco-friendly? – question that has been raised by climate activists.
COP27 attendees
Nearly 40,000 attendees all across the globe will be arriving in Egypt for COP 27.
“COP27 is a moment for world leaders to regain momentum on climate change. To move from negotiation to action. Together”, tweeted the United Nations.
